Jack, out of curiosity, why wouldnt the VTAC be used as a bush tool? just inquisitive...

as for my response, pretty much, you get what you pay for. while hatchet is correct, cold steel isnt BAD for the $, they are no ATC product. i say save your $ and buy something of caliber that can stand up to anything and be able to be counted on, even if all you are doing is camping 40 feet from your SUV (or honda;)) i am in the army and while i have NOT seen any combat at this point, there is a keen chance i may in the future, upon receiving my commission. that being said, i want something that i can count on 110% of the time. ATC is my choice. hatchet has FAR more experience than i in hawk talk and hawk experience, but i will stand my VTAC up against anything he has... wait he has one too.. haha. my suggestion is get an ATC VTAC. for a mere a buck 30, you can have the hawk that all other hawks are judged against.

oh yea, hatchetjack - your pictures are always a pleasure to view.... is that a Swamp Rat or the Ranger knife I asked you about yesterday? looks mighty fine! how much you got in it?

Yeah, that VTAC is a wicked looking beauty.

And there's one for sale on the auction site for 99.00.

But I'm going with the Fort Turner Camp Axe, I think it will suit
my purposes just fine. As I mentioned earlier, for just a bit more than
the Cold Steel it's a USA made semi-custom tool.

(Though again, all the points made about Cold Steel's value are well taken.)

I would not use the VTAC as a bush tool mainly because the grind is too thick for chopping through wood in comparison to say one of my Ft. Turners and it can't be used as a hammer because of the spike end. That's all. Now if I was to crash through cinder blocks, my first choice after a sledge hammer would be a VTAC.

The blade is a Ranger RD9. The older version. I've had it for a couple years now. I had a kydex sheath made for it by David Brown. The Ranger and kydex sheath together set me back less than 200 bucks.

I recall years ago spending 2 weeks backpacking alone in the Sierra Nevada mountains and the only tools I had and could afford then was a U.S. issue Camillus pocket knife and a beat up old Ka-Bar I bought from Herb's surplus. No 'hawks, VTAC not even a hatchet. Then again, I was mostly broke on a student wage and didn't have forums to research back in the day. Point here is that I made what I had work and lived to tell about it. Best thing to have is knowledge and then the tools to execute the task. Could be any of these 3: Trail Hawk, Ft. Turner or VTAC.

Can't go wrong with Dana Turner's work. He's a very nice gentleman and I had the pleasure of meeting him last year at a Mt. Man show here in Washington.

VTAC's are great for beating things up and 99 bucks is a good deal. I'm off today. Hmm....I think I'll go out back and throw some iron...:D

Here's another pic for Reconseed:

Hatchetjack and his countless tomahawk photography. Very nice sir.

(i save them - i am putting together an iMovie on my iMac of ATC products so i wanna get as many QUALITY pictures as I can - dont worry, credit will be given to those posting the pictures. ;))

We are not a division of Cold Steel. A search here on BF will raise the various threads associated to the issue.

Recon...got your notes...sorry have not gotten back to you sooner...will send you an e-mail.

Hope everyone is well and great pics.

perhaps you could explain
i did a quick search and found nothing
and am holding in my hand the AMC sticker which was on the hawk i recieved today from CS
also the link in my above post

FWIW im not trying to be a jerk

l have both an ATC Rogers Rangers and a Cold Steel Frontier Hawk.

l've put the CS hawk through some heavy use since early 1994 and have no issues with it other that the scrawny stubby haft it came with... but the ATC came with a short haft too.

But FWIW though, the ATC takes and holds a much better edge and has much thicker blade. lt would be my first choice if something majorly bad went down.

I have a Hays Montana Hunter. This hammer poll hawk is my best camp tool. It pounds tent stakes. It chops game and firewood. I couldn't ask or more. It's been on one hunt and two camping trips so far. I doubt I'll go into the forest again without it.

Here's a link to some pics:

It costs a bit more than $100, but like was said above . . . you get what you pay for.

markksr,

I'm not affiliated with ATC in any way, just a fan. ATC makes a far superior product in the tradition of the original Vietnam Tomahawk. While I have some of their knives, and have no issues with them, their aggressive advertising campaign can be at best "questionable", hence their use of the "American Tomahawk Company" name
