So I got a bee in my bonnet so to speak and decided to do a trial run and see how thy handle. I must say I really like it after I did a handful of tweaks. The grip section might be a tad fat but I program the plasma to leave a tid bit around the profile for clean up. It also give you the flexibility to re shape it a tad if you want to. I cut out a handful and I’m going to heat treat them and possibly pass a few out to members to see what the feedback is. I paid for the 80CrV2 sheet today and it’s shipping out tomorrow.

Pictures in next post.

That looks darn good, and a VERY useful size. What is the thickness? Any idea of price point yet?

I increased the dimensions from the original as I had to lengthen the tang area as it was only like 3.6” of usable grip area. I bumped that to 5” and changed the head a tad as well. I will need to recalculate the amount of material used. Because this is a big group run I will nest 2 togather and calculate material used for that. I will put them on my website soon.

I know some of you wanted a spike, if this is still the case I can do one with a spike. I’m torn between adding cutouts under the scales or not. It would lighten this a tad but would move center of Balance towards the head.

Once everything is set up I will start a thread letting you know it is up on my site. This thread was more for tossing the design out there and seeing what you guys thought.

what’s your thoughts on location of pin holes? With the shorter grip I had the first pin hole up higher but now I’m not sure.

Oh I like it a lot!

If there is anyone else who wants a spike I'd pick up at least 1 with a spike.

How much does it weigh as is?

As I said JT, the outline looks really good just like it is. With that said, how useful will the "hammer" head be? Won't it be pretty thin rather than wide like a normal hatchet head would be? If fairly thin I think I'd opt for the spike also. I can see a few times when the spike could be useful, but not sure how useful the narrow hammer head would be. Comments from folks on this idea.

On the pin holes, I think I'd prefer just where they're at. For the axe you want a fairly long handle, not a short handle. Too long isn't a problem, but too short would be.

On the cutouts - why? You're going to say a couple of ounces? For simplicity I'd think a solid tang would be just fine.

I wonder how effective pinning or screwing something on the hammer to widen it when needed. Like a bit that you could put on and take off if you needed to.

In my mind the hammer would be used for things like tent stakes and pegs cracking nuts and whatnot, which would work just fine as is. Wouldn't use it for nails unless you were really up the creek.

Maybe even upsetting it would work too. I had a hunter that wanted a thicker portion back there. I’ll probably try something when I get a couple.
Actually probably not enough steel back there to upset.

here’s the type of bit i was referring to, something like this. Anyone ever try something like this on their tomahawk?
