I know that steel is a matter of opinion but I was wondering if you guys have some preferred steel for a tomahawk project I want to do. I want to do a woodsman/bushcraft style with a full tang and a hammer back rather than a spike. I don't have access to forging but was thinking of doing something in 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch and doing it via stock removal. So far I was thinking maybe 1095 or 1084? Preferably something that wouldn't break the bank because it will have to be a pretty large piece of steel.. Maybe there is a stainless that would work? Thanks in advance guys, your collective wisdom is astounding!

5160 will be readily available in those sizes and dirt cheap compared to other options. Should be plenty tough for a tomahawk.

1070, 1084, 5160 all make great hawks. Aldo has them.

I like 3/4" square stock in 1070. It forges well, will forge weld easily, and is cheap.

Is it just me or does everywhere seem sold out of steel. Aldo only has 5160 in 1 inch bars, which I can't forge. Is it a pipe dream to think I will be able to find a slab of 5160 1/4 inch thick by five or six inches wide?

First, call Aldo. Don't rely on the website. He may have it and just not have the site updated.

He has 1075 in 1/4" and 5/16" in any width you want. (Perfect for a hawk.)
He also has 1080 in 3/4 and 1" square ( very good hawk forging choices).
He has 80CRV2 in 1/4" and 3/8" thick, and any width you wish. (made to forge - also a good hawk steel)
