Nice Stuart, it's handy to forge them from ball peens, but it is cool when you can't tell :D.

Very nice! BTW which brand of hammers are best to use....what type of steel are they made of for HT purposes??

Thanks for all the compliments. I appreciate it.

I use the U.S. made hammers by Vaughan. Heat treat like 1045

Beautiful american heritage style hawk good job. How long did it take on the anvil or did you use the power hammer?.

What do you use to shape the handle so smoothly and evenly? I've done a few for my African woodcarving adzes just for my own use (i.e., not prettily) and have never been able to come close to what you did.

I have a power hammer. Before the power hammer it would take about 8 hours.

I use a spoke shave for the initial carving then go to scrapers. Then to sandpaper ending up with steel wool.

i dont know the right terminology so please bear with me. the hole in the hawk that the handle goes through, do you resize that, or reshape it at all?

thanks

jake
