Primarily because you can shape the handle however you want. A hawk eye requires that the entire handle be small enough to pass through the eye. IMO that's a HUGE downside. You have to balance between an unnecessarily large eye and a tiny (or non-existent) grip swell.
That's my concern too. Wish I had a standard hawk around here to play with to decide how much I like the standard handle. Hm. Maybe I have to spend ~$50 to get a decent basic hawk and then decide exactly how I'll spend the rest of my play money. I'm trying to LIMIT the proliferation of chopping tools, things are just about overrun as it is - there wasn't much space to start with.
