We have 3 large tomato plants in 5 gallon buckets. Worms started an attack but I collected cigarette butts in a can , added warm water, strained the mix & sprayed the leaves.. BOOM !

These suckers are over 5 ' tall & full of almost full grown tomatoes, they are in 5 gallon buckets. Now it looks as if they have stopped growing. The tomatoes are resting. Is this normal ?

Any suggestions ?

Uncle Alan needs to know.

Sounds like all th plants energy went into the plant itself? Is it flowering? Everywhere theres a flower - you'll have a tomato.

There are almost 2 dozen tomatoes & more flowers than that. They have been trimmed so we'll have to wait.

Uncle Alan smile.

I don't want you to lose any sleep over it, but zombies and poltergeists love tomatoes. Keep an eye on them.

Alan the reason the plants stopped growing is because they are in the 5 gallon buckets. They need to be planted in the ground to realize their full potential. Indeterminate variety tomatoe roots will grow several feet long in fertile garden soil.

In Florida we have nematodes in the soil .When the fruit matures & you pick it the bottom of the tomato falls apart.

Depends on what type of tomato. Are your plants indeterminate or determinate? Determinate varieties are the ones that put out all their tomatoes at one time and then stop. Indeterminate varieties keep putting out tomatoes until frost.

Tobacco water and tomatoes, sounds like your making Tomacco!

I sympathize. In central Alabama where I grew up, we had a hard time raising watermelon if we got a lot of rain becuase the soil was so rich.

The vines grew so fast that they wore drag holes in the bottom of the watermelons.

Tonight we ate our first tomato. Wow ! Such a juicy delight.! T'wewen't a giant [tennis ball ] but a very tasty one . Bit of salt & pepper & a liberal slather of mayo.

God is great. Imagine the good from 1 tiny seed !

Be careful that you don't end up with tobacco mosaic virus using the butts, you'll know you've got it if your leaves start getting really blotchy and brown. I'm not sure if it affects tomatos but I've seen other produce that was really affected by it if you smoked around them or smoked before handling them, and it tended to spread from one plant to the ones surrounding it.

Thank you.
They are surviving splendidly.Just had meatloaf, mozzarella & our tomatoes. Great lunch ! God is great !
