Tommy Gann coffin-handled bowie

Lots of good comments. It's always nice to hear what other collectors and makers think when looking at a piece with a critical eye. When I posted the knife I knew the Spanish notch would be the main discussion point. In general, I'm not a huge fan of them, although it works with this knife in my opinion.

There are lots of varied skills represented in this knife. It's perhaps my favorite knife of Tommy's to date. I'm looking forward to seeing his future work.

Kevin - What handle material would you choose for this knife?

I bet he has worn out a pile of files. He has mad skills. He makes more decorative forged knives and in that genre I think he is the rising star along with John White.
He is in good company.

The construction of this pair by Tommy Gann, JS give us a clue as to how a "Notchless" version might appear.

I think like many people I have looked at this knife and you have put me out of my misery.

I think the black wood is a perfect choice for an embellished knife it accents and highlights the intricacies perfectly, anything else would be too busy. This knife has a monochromatic quality which I think is fantastic.

The spanish notch sets the knife off very well, and is very cleanly executed. They are very subjective for as many who don't like them, there will be as many who do, perhaps not on this forum, but their recurrence over the centuries indicate a tenacity born out of popularity.

The reason I did not buy this knife is because the week it came on sale I had just placed an order with the maker.

Congrats.

Agree completely. It also works well (and for the same reasons) with a bold high-contrast damascus blade.

A subtle grained Ironwood or Ivory.
My comments regarding the blackwood is just a personnel thing and has nothing to do with this particular knife as I just don't care for blackwood in general. I find it lifeless, uninviting and adds nothing that any solid black material could also add. I do understand it can serve a design purpose in neutralizing the handle itself to set off other handle and knife accents and features as it does with the handle accents here. I examined this knife and it's even more outstanding than the photo depicts.

Here's one of Tommy's knives that I'm particularly fond of, including the spanish notch.
