I just got a landi in a trade and it's a little on the small side. That's why I got it, but I need a chopper. Hatchets and hawks just seem easier to chop, and cooler to look at. I've seen a very nice Vietnam styled hawk for about 140.

Do any of you know a nam styled hawk cheaper with polymer handles? I'd like to paint it ACU. Let me, know I have about $150 and would like to keep it under that. I'd like it to be made in America, and for it to be Under 28 inches over all.

Just curious
How do you paint ACU?
Or is it some decal kit?===>

Has anyone tried those kits?
Is it easy?

I bought the S&W version of the 'Nam hawk years ago.

I hate to say it, but it is not a very good camp tool. I much prefer my woodmans pal, but I am eying a belt axe also.

Not that it can't chop some stuff, just the small cutting head, lack of weight and spear point on the backside make it inconvenient as a chopper. Use as a wedge is all but impossible.

Now if you want to use it for opening brain pans.......

If you want a hawk, are you dead set on that style? Having the hammer poll on the back really increases the utility, as in the Cold Steel Trail Hawk. They're cheap and fun to mod. Here's mine:

The hawks will bite super deep when you make a chop (like they're designed to for stuff other than wood), but they also stick a lot. They're not splitting tools either.

They're basically weapons first and tools second, so I bring an axe/hatchet instead. Still cool as crud though! :D

I like that, but cold steel doesn't make a sheath for that. And it'd be a hassle for me to look for a sheath maker to make me one for it.

I have the ATC hawk as well and I like it, but it isn't as efficient of a camp tool as I'd like. Something like the CS hawk, or better yet a Fiskars hatchet works better IMO. The Fiskars is relatively cheap too.

I had a sheath for my Fiskars done by JRE and I'm getting ready to send them a spiked hawk to do soon.

Picked this up at a gunshow yesterday, CS Norse hawk. A little fire, linseed oil and a whole lot of file time and it is starting to take shape.

When I bought it the edge looked like a drunk monkey ground it with a cinder block. I started with the belt sander and broke a belt  so just broke out the bastard and went to work. I have thinned the edge down quite a bit and started putting an edge on it, it seems to be shaping up fairly good. I have only chopped one 2" branch with it so far but it bit deep and tracked well so it seems like it is going to shape up nice. Now I need to start thinking about a sheath. Chris

the SOG Fusion Tomahawk might fot the bill. ive never handles one or anything, but they look pretty usable. i do not however remember the price.

I have a couple of nice Beaver Bill hawks. The basic throwing one (which is still heat treated for normal use) was only about $50.

I sent an e-mail through the forum Les. I've only been registered with BF for 10 years, I haven't figured out how PT's here work yet :p

Got it! Thanks!

I meant to say E-mail, not PM. I'm electronically challenged myself!:D
