So I have been reading up for a while. Collecting for even longer. Using knives while camping, hunting, daily utility, and even studying Filipino martial arts.

I ordered 1084 steel some time ago then procrastinated and procrastinated and ...

Tomorrow I am going to start the attempt to make my first knife.

I am not expecting much, I am not a handy person. But I will enjoy the challenge and hopefully learn something from it.

I have followed the recommendations on this forums and it’s time to stop over thinking and dive into it.

My first uncertainty which will probably unfold as I go is whether I will stay basic or allow myself to use power tools. I like the concept of ones first knife being made with hand tools, sweat and prob a little blood. However I may change my mind after cutting, cutting, filing, filing, etc.

Thank you to all for being so willing to share knowledge and please wish me good luck!

Nothing wrong with using power tools. Especialy when cutting out the profile. If you don't have a grinder then drill holes along your profile. The closer the better and then cut the web with a hack saw. A little tip, if you think you have come up with a unique knife design you might want to post it here so we can look it over. Good luck and have fun

Do the very best you can but remember the knife is not the take away. The lessons you learn are the take away. You will not build your dream knife your first time. You are learning foundation skills that will accumulate. Eventually you will have enough confidence and experience to build what you imagine. Until then, be open minded, humble and inquisitive. Ask for advice when you need it. Do not go directly to the grinder with your bar of steel. Start with drawings and post them here. These folks will get you pointed in the right direction with your design. You can start with hand tools but unless you are a glutton for punishment you will soon gravitate towards power tools. Good luck.

I chalanged myself to make my first knife without power tools.
(I did use a drillpress and I always outsource HT)
I enjoyed the proces and made me extra proud.
Take your time and allow yourself to make mistakes. They are part of the proces and fixing your mistakes can be rewarding.
Most important: enjoy yourself!

Just finished my first one. Nothing wrong with using power tools but regardless which way you go take your time and have fun.
