Indeed. We have quite a Hangover of Porkers here.

I'm going to try out some Balvenie 17 yr that was matured in oloroso sherry casks. Not sure how that's going to go. The sherry treatment is really MacAllan's thing ... might not bring anything interesting out of a strong dram like Balvenie.

I'll report back after I've recovered. :) I should mention that, in the spirit of Tony's and Skunk's experiments with Edradour Ballechin ... this is also a rare first edition whisky. As my supplier noted: "A dearly departed whisky."

The Doublewood Balvenie is an old friend. This Balvenie is a fully sherry-matured whisky. It will be ... unusual.

All the best to Scott and Vicky ... and to all you Merry Porkers.

I just procured special order!! Some unchill-filtered!!!!!!!!!!

Well, do tell! Which special order?

BTW, I'm not entirely sold on "unchill-filtered." Could just be another doggone marketing scheme to sell us rubes on more expensive whisky -- when it's actually cheaper for them to make (they get to skip a step).

Also, what if you accidentally swallow a "nasty bit"?? :grumpy:

It could, of course, just be my natural cynicism. :)

Edradour. And a ten year. From a tennessee warehouse! Think they said they were all small bottles

Oh! I have a few of those. A good way to try out a new single malt.

I've tried out The Balvenie 17 (sherried). A success, I think:
Balvenie17Sherry2.jpg

The nose is very intense and complex with lots of spice and fruit. I can smell the wonderful sherry I associate with a good MacAllan. The taste starts out very spicy, with lots of Xmas spice (cinnamon and clove, definitely), then a complex sequence of liquored fruits (stone fruits, I think, like cherries and plums and apricots and dark fruits (raisin, prune). The finish is very long and rich and rewarding, but it still ends with the traditional Balvenie dryness (I like that).

For those who insist on a more complete description, the body is "rounded" and the dram is firm in the clutch. There is a strong oak palate with the middle as I've described above. The afterthought would best be described as a bitter dry spice. Sorry -- this sort of language is pretty pretentious. :o

It's really too bad there's so little of this. I was fortunate to find this first edition ... wouldn't have if Tony G and Scott hadn't inspired me. :)

This sort of thing is a wonderful use for old sherry butts. They are made of European oak and are used to mature the justly famous Spanish sherries you've heard of (but might not have tasted). One use to mature sherry, then one use to improve single malt. After that?? Who knows ...

FWIW, The Balvenie is generally only matured in classic style, as it is a famous Speyside malt -- using American oak casks. Strong, intense, and (yes) very manly. The Balvenie is a traditional prestige drink for the Scottish professional, which is where I first learned to appreciate it.

Just added a splash of water. As usual, it gets a bit cloudy. The water seems to bring out the fruit ... and just a hint of vanilla, such as you might get in an American bourbon (although most folks claim that's a caramel or butterscotch flavor).

Slight correction.

I believe I recommended Glenturret above. Jim Murray has reminded me that if you're going to sip a Glenturret, look for the 18.

"Genuine depth and weight. An aroma captured from a summer garden. Firm mouthfeel then an explosion of acacia honey controlled, somewhat, by soft oak. A long, cream toffee finish. But with honey in the middle."

"A thought-provoking, complex and enjoyable whiskey."

I've only got half a bottle left, carefully preserved. :(

[Of course, Glenturret 21 is a true marvel. But ... you won't find it.]

[If you want to try for a legendary whisky, look for the Adelphi bottling of Highland Park 17 Cask 2903. Both the man himself, Michael Jackson, and Dave Broom went into flights of ecstasy over this whisky. I've not found it, but I keep looking. This is a distillery I just haven't been to ... yet.]

The 17 y.o. Balvenie is one of my all time favorites. A beautiful single malt!

I’m drinking champagne this evening because I need to figure out which to have for Christmas dinner. DeAnne will be here to help soon.

I keep things simple; yes I like it no I don’t. I have never been able to articulate what my senses errr sensed.

I think it is from looking at women. I mean once you tell a guy that she had a nice ass there isn't much left to say. :p

DeAnne!! she keeps you in line!! your like a new man when she's around!!

If I cut her lose in the Busse forum and I was posting at the same time we'd both be banned in one night. She is way way funnier than me, but she can spell; also our sense of humors are well aliened and she even thinks faster.

The only bummer would be all that wedding ring crap that gets posted :grumpy:

What a bunch of women :p
