I'd suggest a smaller knife, 3-4" blade length, that you can use for food prep, whittling shavings, cutting rope, etc., and forget about the self defence aspect. If that's a serious concern, take a firearm you know how to use (safely). Check Ragweed Forge for a wide selection of puukkos and related blades. Other choices: Roselli carpenter's knife, CS Master Hunter, Marble's Fieldcraft, just about any Mora (they're cheap, too), Helle knives, or a good lockback such as a Buck 110.
