It's much more difficult with the new software to see the new posts.
Not as obvious, to me anyways, where the stickies end, and the meat begins.

I agree, Brian. The new layout makes it much more difficult to see where one ends and the other begins. It's also more difficult to see the difference between the bold and normal type, who started the thread, who replied, etc. I'm sure there are some tweaks to make this better but either I haven't found them yet or they aren't yet accessible.

I think the number of stickies up at the moment is a bit much, but that's just me.

But are the newbies actually reading the stickies? Seems like a lot of questions keep getting asked that are covered in the stickies...

I do, but, you are correct, soooooo many questions that are answered in the stickies, and if not easily found in the stickies, EASILY found in search.
We could consolidate to one sticky organized with sub folders and one more that says "Search is Your Friend" :D. . .
We can also "count" on Count replying to the newbies with the Standard Reply to New Knifemakers....:D:D:D:D

I have been considering doing some sort of clean up already.
I had thought of asking Spark how difficult it would be to add a sub-forum page ( like "Around the Grinder") named " FAQ - Check Here for often discussed topics and useful links". This would allow a single click to open an area where we could move information and create a link library for the many good threads containing charts and info. It would work best if it was a read only area, not a discussion page. Regular stickies on the "Shop Talk" page would be for the few threads with a real need to be there, like "Rules and posting advise", threads that are a current group project ( KITH, Collaborations, etc.), and a safety sticky where old threads can be linked to about respirators, dust collection systems, etc.

In the mean time, I plan on condensing the current stickies a bit into a smaller group. I will move all the "How To" types of stickies into a "Good Information ,Tutorials, and How-To info Here" single sticky. It will have a topic list that will give the links to the current and future tutorials. I will also create a FAQ sticky, and any thread that seems to be a good topic for that area will be listed in it. All anyone has to do is request a mod to move a thread to the appropriate sticky and we will do it ( if suitable).

This way we will only have a couple of stickies, but a lot more information available in them.
Please let me know by PM/email if you have any threads or links you wish added to these two new stickies......but wait until after the changes are made.

I will follow this thread to keep track of your ideas and comments.

stickies "used to be" ..... FAQs.

So just make an FAQ box for the top of each catagory. Put all the simple stuff there. Particularly in the Q&A dept., we/you should have all of Kevin Cashen's treads organized and listed; very useful. Most of whats on Q&A now could be condensed to "For new knifemakers" including safety tips and supplies.

Seeing that we now have 11 stickies, does anyone else think that we have too many?

I don't think we have too many stickies but it sometimes is irksome to have to scroll past them all the time.

How about making fewer stickies but putting more into each one along with links pointing to all sorts of additional helpful places.

Plus 2 from me!!! I'm glad to know it's not just me that isn't liking the new colors/lay-out. At first I just thought I was one of those guys that doesn't like change--- but at this point I feel like it's just plain hard to read the forum now.

As far as scrolling past stickies/whatever--- I guess I don't see that as a big issue because it takes about 3/4 of a second to scroll past it all--- I just wish it was easier to see where old and new meet.
