Too much junk...

I'm pretty new here, so first, hello everyone.

Now, I started collecting knives from antique stores when I was probably 8 years old. My parents are really into antiques, so I was always dragged to these places when I was a kid.

I recently moved, and in the process, found my old collection of knives. For the most part, they are pretty junky. Some older Case, a few Schrades...my grandfathers pocket knife from his days in the Marines...I did find a couple of interesting things.

My problem is, I am not sure if I should sell them to fuel my growing knife interest. Or if I should hold onto them to add to my new collection.

The one that has given me the most trouble is a Marbles Ideal knife. I don't really have any attachment to it, and I'm guessing I could get more for it that a Schrade with a broken blade.

Any advice folks? What's your take on sacrificing some cool pieces to get some more? Where do you draw the line? Is this knife one I should hold onto?

All I can say is hold on to Grandpa's knife, or you'll surely regret it later!

And welcome!

Hahaha, yeah...I have a handfull of his stuff from WW2, though the swords that he got when he was in Japan were stolen before I was born...too bad.

I still can't decide what to do with the Marbles.

If it was me, I would hang on to the knives you already have(especially grandpa's), and just add to your collection. Buy yourself a good quality knife, and take your time adding quality pieces to the rest.

Have you tried asking Bernard Levine over on his forum? He could likely give you a good idea of the worth of your pieces, especially that Ideal.
Good Luck!:)

Hang on to everything you already have. You don't miss the money, so that's not the issue. The more you learn about and collect knives, the more you'll know about the stuff you bought long ago, and it's potential value. You can always sell them later -- that is, IF you don't decide to keep any or all of them as the basis for a specific collection.

get rid of em.
i know a real good guy in arkansas (me ;)) that will take real good care of em,hell,i will even pay shipping!

now,on a more serious note.
keep any of them that mean ANYTHING to you at all. you will be sorry if you get rid of them.i have a buck odyssey my dad got me for x-mas last year. i don carry it,i rarely even take it out,but will i sell it or get rid of it?

HELL NO

why not?
cuz it means something to me. when he's gone, ill still have that knife.it will never leave the family.ever.

its nothing fancy.
420 steel, plastic scales,etc.
but it still means a lot to me.

I hate getting rid of stuff...

My stomache get's upset everything I think about selling or throwing something out. (Unless of course it's beyond a showdow of a doubt I'll never need or want it in the future.)

keep the old stuff!!!

It's something you can't replace. You can always go buy the newest ultra-mega-cool-tech-fighter knife. There is something special about a well used knife. Especially your grandpa's stuff - you can't ever get that back once you get rid of it. Sometimes I would rather carry an old beater with lots of character than a brand new knife.

My advice would be to fix them up and use them. If you get rid of them you may deeply regret it down the road...

I wouldn't be in any hurry to sell your older knives. Any collector items of value will only accrue value. Any "junk" won't go down much, if any.

There are many books on knives, and some on collecting. You could easily decide 2 years from now that you're going to become a serious Marbles collector. You'd be kicking yourself forever if you'd sold it now.

I wouldn't labor to establish sentiment about any of your knives either. If any have genuine sentimental value, you'll recognize it. If you should decide in future to collect knives from a fairly narrow spectrum, you'll still be better off for the knowledge you've obtained about your knives, before you sell them.

Of course, if you're already certain that some of your knives have no sentimental value for you, and you want the money they represent to buy knives you are interested in, then why wait? Check them w/Bernard Levine and co, and sell your knives for as good a price as possible. If the knives you wish to buy have little collector's value, then just expect to lose from 10-50% on them, should you ever desire to sell them in future.

Good luck with your decisions.

You kids (yes eventually you will have some of these) will hate you for getting rid of the stuff. What you should be doing is documenting the history behind each piece. The latest techno stuff is fine, but it has no history behind it, and paticularly no family history. If these items were important enough for you grandfather to hold on to they should be important enough for you to safeguard them for future generations.

In time you will appreciate what we are telling you. If you get rid of it - you'll be sorry......

Welcome to the forums.

BTW, if you put some pics up we can help you identify some of the stuff.

I didn't intend for anyone to think I was going to off my grandfather's stuff. No way! That's the stuff I want to keep. Its the things that have no meaning to me that I can't decide what to do with. And frankly, I can't think of anyone that would want to pay anything for them.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I am going to keep my Marbles (ahum). It does need a new sheath though. The original one is all fallin apart. I couldn't ever carry the knife, if I wanted to, it would fall out. I'm not going to get rid of the old one (before anyone yells at me) but where can I get a decent sheath for it?

Thanks,

Ted

ps - sell grandpas stuff...you've got to be kidding me...I still have his sunglasses for crying out loud...and his beatup pool queue, which I still use.

I posted some stuff on ebay, don't know if it will sell. I would just get a membership and sell them on the forums here, but I don't think anyone would be interested.

Thanks again for the suggestions folks....my ebay name is wemmusic (if you're lookin for some cheap stuff)
