too prepared is there such a thing??

You don't carry too much you've just thought about what you might need. You can always re-evaluate what you have and drop anything that seems out of place or unnecessary. Personally, on a day hike I carry probably the same kit if not more. You're just being prepared and sometimes that takes a strong back and little more room in your pack! :D

I'm not a hiker, but I carry more stuff on my person on a daily basis than most hikers do! And my truck . . . well, I am prepared.

Some of my friends and acquaintances tease me about it . . . until they need something I have, or I have something needed for the group.

If you Carry A 4000 cubic inch or greater pack for a picnic you are carrying too much:D

No way, I need a big pack for the beer cooler ;)

I need to look into headlamps. Frankly, they look geeky to me but I'm beginning to see their advantages. Any recommendations?

You can never be over prepared, unless it really prevents you from moving around. I keep a backpack stocked with my kit, a shotgun in the roof rack of my truck, my pistols, and sleeping gear in a flight bag in the rear of my rig in case I ever need to overnight unexpectedly. Your canopy is your home!

Gibson, my headlamp is the princeton tec 2 LED model, that clips onto a strap or hat brim if need be. Works for me.

Unless one is privy to knowledge of precisely when things are gonna go bad (where where you on the morning of 9/11?) there is no such thing as being too prepared. This is why I'm always worried when I let my gas tank get down to "E." However, there is a problem with being too paranoid. ;)

petzel makes darn good headlamps to one on a bike ride across amsterdam.. and caving several times have had it for 5 years and still going strong
