hey guys, i was working on a small piece of damascus i bought on Ebay today and got the tip pretty much pointy sharp. i know the norm is to leave the blade around the thickness of a dime, so is this a bad thing i got it too sharp? it's just the very tip, not the whole blade. oh, and i am looking for recommendations on HTing 1080/L6/Pure Nickel damascus. since i dont have an oven myself, i am wondering who might be able to help a newb out with the HT on this little beauty?
1" x 4" larry donnelly damascus/afzeila xy lay scales, or that's what it will be, anyway!

If the edge is a little thin just at the tip, I'd consider running the edge along the grinder, shaving just a tiny fraction of to bring it to thickness..

can't help with the HT, but someone else should be able to..

jab8000's suggestion is correct. You are going to be okay for the HT. A dime thickness is really thicker for an edge than you will want. You will learn that later as you hand sharpen the thick hardened edges. Twenty mill of an inch edge thickness prior to HT is plenty thick enough.

And twenty thousanths will work even better !!!
(twenty mill must have been a mistype for twenty mil)

.020" is a good thickness.

Yea I did the maths and thought half a micron was a lil on the small side. Thanks Stacy Now I can use that as a guide. I overground my current knife to hell too and am going to land up with a much smaller blade than planned!

You can send it to me if you need a hand with heat treat just include shipping both ways,

Or you can do a little reading and build a coffee can forge and do it yourself. Search and read buddy.

I have gotten away with HT'ing blades with the edges sharp enough to nearly cut you when using PBC antiscale compound. I am in no way recommending this, merely stating that I have gotten away with it on several occasions.

Gee thanks Stacy. You want the extra 'L'. I don't need any more this morning.
