What an eye opener. I certainly have newfound respect for those who forge knives from scratch.
The most intersting thing was that on day two, all but one of them (male and female) got busy making knives. We were welcomed to create anything - but knives were peoples go-to. There was a real mix of folk, from experienced artists and tradesmen to a banker chap who could barely lift the hammer - he made a knife too - a scimitar of a thing, destined he assured me, for kitchen duties.
I thought it was marvelous - it shows how fundamentally useful knives are and how strongly they feature in our psyches - and not just us knife nuts either.
Did I make one? Of course! a cunning little scalpel for field work. And no, you are never going to see it.
