I couldn't wait to take the BK16 out for a camping trip so this weekend I did a short overnight stay on Big Creek. Big Creek is a wide shallow creek where I spent most of my summers growing up in Mississippi. I packed up the Becker and some minimal gear and left out for Mississippi after work Friday. I decided to park at a bridge and wade upstream. The creek was knee to hip deep in most places but I did have to hoist the pack up a couple times to get through some chest deep holes.
Then I came up on a section of clay "rapids" that went all the way across the creek.
Nothing scary but it does look mighty slippery.... Becker to the rescue.
I was able to make a nice walking stick that saved my butt many times as I walked barefoot over the clay.
I found a small but adaquate sandbar just past this point to set up camp. The rushing water made a pleasant soundtrack for the night. I cut some stakes and poles for the tarp and made my tent in a trench at the edge of the woods. This wouldn't be good if it rained but the loose sand covered by a cotton sheet made for a soft bed. There was no rain in the forecast and the sky stayed mostly clear.
Finally, it was time for dinner. I split some wood with the Becker and with the help of a fire steel I had a decent little fire. I didn't have any luck with the fishes so I just had noodles.
The becker cut through wood like butter. I was a little hesitant about battoning with it but there was zero damage to the edge.
I really wanted to do more but I had to hurry to set up camp before dark and in the morning I had to pack up and head home, too many chores. I can't wait to get back out there again.
