What is the tool called that Tia uses to hold down the flat stock on the anvil while punching a hole. I have not seen one before and would like to know how to buy or make one. I once needed a third hand and had my wife hold the tongs and that did not work out so well. I need a better alternative.

Thanks

John

I don't know what that tool is called, but I'm pretty he forged it himself out of (I think) .5" round stock. I used it to hot-cut when I took a class with him early this year, and it held the bar stock very nicely.

It's just a holding tool, hold fast, hold down,... whatever. I made it myself out of a piece of 1/2 inch coil spring. It needs to be a bit smaller diameter than the hole in the anvil. The slight arc or curve in the stem, plus the spring of the main arch hold it in place with pressure and friction. The form is easy to forge, but they usually need a bit of tweaking to get them to work right. You also need to harden it and temper it real good so it doesn’t snap or bend. I’ve been using that one for over 12 years.

I don't recommend using mild steel. It bends too easy,... not springy enough. Spring steel will allow you to hold things much tighter, more secure and will last much longer without needing adjustments. The "spring" to it is very important.
