Tool list

As all of you can see I don't know a thing about making knives with any this equipment. I'm trying to learn. So what's the surface grinder attachment for? I'm assuming to make your blade as flat and true as possible. Is there anything else this attachment can do, like bevel grinds or hollow grinds? I know some of you guys might think I shouldn't go all in on buying all this equipment. I might not even like making knives! Hell yall, I'm retired I don't have anything else to do. My hips hurt too much to play golf or run marathons. Worst case scenario I buy a TW90 and not like making knives and sell it to one of you for half price LOL My goal is to make my kids a set of kitchen knives that they can give their kids, and say hey my dad made these for me.

The surface grinder will produce a uniform flat surfaces. It can be set to create a Tapered Tang which helps reduce weight in the handle area and is visual feature knife buyers find appealing to the eye and a sign of added craftsmanship. Uniform flatness is a must for building folding knives especially in the Tang/Pivot area it can be achieved by hand on a "Surface Block" but its painstaking hours of hand lapping.

Do you need a surface grinder starting out....probably not...TW-90 comes with everything you need to Start making knives. Check out Travis Wuertz Videos youtube then try and find other machine makers using their products!

BTW if you only make a couple hundred knives you will get most of your money back should you decide to sell the machine...I can't say that for a KMG or Origin machines

A cheaper grinder would suit your needs imho
A lot of pros don't have a tw 90 or surface grinders
In your position with time on my hands and wanting to learn new things I'd build a kmg clone type grinder, building your own tools to make knives can be as rewarding as making knives. Arc welder, angle grinder and off you go to your local scrap metal guy and have fun

Dang Yall! I never have seen people say a product is far superior as you all are saying about the TW90. What attachments is a must for the TW90? The other grinder I was looking at came with 3 or 4 small wheels, platen, and a 10 or 12-inch wheel for 2000.00. The TW90 at 3600.00 if I have to buy any other attachments it will take all of my money.
I dont know about superior....but
The two 90 is nice cause it comes ready to work.

But my Northridge is getting paid for today and shipped sometime in a week or 2 :)

Although with all the accessories it right at 4000

I'm going to wait on the ratchet arm tensioner till the stock one wears out so I'm looking at 3700 plus shipping

Edit to add
..with the year or so long wait I've had
I thought about saying screw waiting and the tw90

Was my fallback choice :)

If you purchase one of the bright orange colored tools to the left, you will save enough money in steel and aggravation, to pay for that new grinder. No, I'm not kidding, Especially about the aggravation. :)

Happy grinding, Fred

If a 2X72 grinder is at the top of the shopping list I would walk past the "Vertical ONLY" machines and shop for tilting Vertical/Horizontal machines. There are more on the market now than ever and I find the extra cost worth the versatility!!

Although if you have a welder you can buy some scrap steel and some heavy duty hinges and weld up your own tilting stand. If you find a grinder you love that doesn’t tilt, that should be the single deciding factor.
