Tool Question 3

Ya Dan, you are "Crusty", but not nearly as IG,,,,must be the relish

As J. McDonald said, keep your hands away from moving parts and cutters. Most of the "Moving tools you asked about are very dangerous!

johnnybegood, you are not located too far from a knifemaker who lives near Wauconda, WA. Look at his website and especially the shop tour. Consider contacting Ray and introducing yourself, mentioning your interest. He is a nice man and may be willing to let you visit to see his shop.

He is also the moderator of the Newbies Forum over on Knifenetworks:

As a side note and a bit of advice, you should consider changing your profile "occupation" to something other than "moocher". It doesn't come off right when you're asking for help. At least from the viewpoint of another crusty old bugger. :)

Good luck and enjoy your learning experience. This is one of those skill sets that doesn't come easy, needs a lot of practice, but is very rewarding.

The best thing I can offer you is get some useable steel and a file or a cheap
bench grinder and see what you come up with if you do well with the bear bones blank and are not put off by the work you'd have put into it you may just have a good chance of moving on. there are guys that really want to make knives but the brain just doesn't communicate with the hands well
find out before getting a lot of wasted time in it,, if you do , do well and want to move on, then build upon that...it will take time..

Mr crusty old bugger :D

Dear Bugger,

Excelent advice, I picked up on that, rite away.

I know you have heard; how the native americans taught there children to run swiftly by having a faster brave run behind them and switch the back of their legs. The result; the neophite, runs faster and therefore avoids the sting of the switch. When I was a new father I would have looked upon this practice as barberous. As my son approched 18 it started to have much more appeal. Fred
