Larry thats a good height gauge for knifemaking. Actually all three of the other tools on your link are very useful too. Great prices also. I use that granite block as a work area daily.

To add to that has anyone used those precision ground blocks as a file guide? I've thought about getting them for a while now because they are cheaper than buying an actually file guide and seem like they could be more useful.

Get yourself a chunk of O-1 precision ground, divide it in half, stack it, drill 2 holes through both so they are in alignment, harden it full-hard, bake it at 350f for an hour to take some of the brittleness out of it, run a bolt through the holes on each side, and you have a file guide. You can actually use any good steel of your choice instead of the O-1 come to think of it, just O-1 is one of the easiest to heat treat

The problem is right now I don't do my own heat treating right now so I only use air hardening steels otherwise that is exactly what I would do!
