Tool Steel Platen

Danbo,

Did you put down common rubber mat, or a special static dissipative mat? A common rubber mat is an electric insulator and would tend to increase the "shock" effect. (I believe).

I can't believe you guys let your grinders punish you for being a knifemaker. I thought thats what wives were for :)

That's why I got rid of mine last year! Honestly, she got rid of me . . . I hate to say. :(

I'm working with glass and I love it, but I groove it rather quickly. Does anyone want to make/sell a D2 platen for me?

What is the pro's to a metal one over pyroceram besides the shock. I've noticed the leather belt basically makes a tesla machine . I had to connect a wire behind the platen and stand on it to stop getting shocked. Has anyone had success with static guard spray?

I use the pyroceram and I got a can of static spray. A couple squirts on the belt, wheels and platen and I don't get zapped. The flat hard surface made a huge difference in my grinds. I didn't realize how much the grooves in the mild steel platen I had before were messing with my lines. I use a contact wheel for profiling to save the platen, plus it is seems faster and smoother.

I made a bunch in 5160 left it fully hardened cause I figured it would temper during grinding. I am pretty sure it gets up to at least 350F... I like them much better than the ceramic ones.

I drilled, tapped and put some radii on my 01 platen. Now I need to heat treat it.

I am still waiting for my motor to come. It should be here next week :)
