Hi guys, I recently bought a small harbour freight 1x30 belt grinder just to get me started with knife making. But i have one issue and that is the only tool steel supplier is a 1.5 hour drive away from me and it's closed the days I have off. So I have no possible way to get there. So my question is where is the best place to buy tool steel online with fairly cheap shipping to Canada. Also what steel should I buy.im not concerned about rusting I just want it to hold a really good edge for a long time and also be able to heat treat is easily. Maybe 01, 1085? One more thing guys I can get a old big circular saw blade from a local sawmill for free. Do you think it's worth making some knifes out of? Thanks for your time

A quick google search turned up this company in Canada. It looks like they have reasonable 1084 (a really good starter steel). https://www.knifemaker.ca/Tool-and-Carbon-Blade-Steel/1084-Carbon-Steel.
You might as well grab the saw blade, cut out a few knives and practice grinding on them.
There's lots of great info contained in the "stickies" at the top of shop talk regarding every aspect of knife making.
Good luck and enjoy!

I've bought from canadian knife maker supply before. Shipping is reasonable and was fast for me.

I believe Aldo ( New Jersey Steel Baron)ships to Canada all the time. Also, the tool steel supplier 1.5 hours away from you probably ships as well.

I believe Knifemaker.ca gets a lot of their steel from Aldo, but yes, the local guy would probably ship some out. Or you could be nice to Frank and see if you can make some sort of deal.

you should make a list of items for knife making that you may need (1x30 belts in various grits, pin stock, handle material, epoxy) and make one order to save on shipping. I like Aldo, but since he only does steel, I will order from him if that's all I need. Otherwise, I shop around and put together one larger order from a site that carries steel as well as other things i need. just my $.02 or whatever the Canadian exchange rate on advice runs these days.

Hey there tattooedfreak, how are you?
I certainly would try to help this fellow out or at least have him visit. Thing is all I have on hand in carbon steel is Damascus. Of couls I do have a couple of kinds of stainless as well. Actually guys he's more 2 1/2 hours away. In any case he can reach me at frankniro2@gmail.com or 250-372-8332 You can too if you wish.
Frank
