I heat treated my first piece of cpm 3v today and everything went as planned except for the tool wrap I used virtually welded itself to the blade. Dose anyone have any insight on how to keep this from happening? It took me over an hour to grind all the stuck stainless off my blade!

Sprinkle the blade with talcum powder and your problem will be solved. I just fold the foil, sprinkle both sides, seal the long edge, shake the excess powder out of one end, & seal up the ends. I buy the generic brands of baby powder in a large container for about a buck and get several hundred blades out of one.

Nowaday I lightly coat the blade with satanite. I've tried quite a few other ways but hated when a bit of ss foil welded onto the blade. Hence, satanite seems to work well + easy and doesn't blacken the blade. ymmv.

Thanks for the tips. I ordered some satanite and I have a two year old so we have a surplus of baby powder around the house, lol. I'll try both and see what works best for me.

Will lightly coating my blades in satanite cause them not to quench properly? I'm quenching my cpm 3v between 1in. thick aluminum plates.

Different strokes for different folks but I wouldn't waste Satanite, when something as cheap as talc works perfectly. Also, it only takes a few seconds to apply where Satanite would require mixing, applying, & drying. Just my opinion.

i jsut leave a bit more air space in the packet. a few times i have welded foil to a blade i was making sure everything was as clean as i coudl and the foil tight (wanted a nice clean post HT finish) had to grind the foil off the blade ad redo all finish work. now days i keep the packets small but not ultra tight (usinging roller around all the blade edges) blades are still clean and less stuck foil

Wrong foil type? I did 3v a couple weeks ago@1950f no problems.
The foil i used was Lyon Industries 309 Annealed from Mcmaster.

I tried the cheap baby powder trick and it worked perfectly! I tried it on 4 blades heated to 1975F for 35 minutes and all the blades slid right out of their foil pouches. Thanks so much for the advise, you saved me a ton of headache and rework.
