Tools for constructing shop

impact driver, also an indispensable tool around here

Working with 2x4s and sheet material like plywood, a mitre saw and a track saw is the best. Those and a cordless drill/driver.

Lol … my only question was about the chop saw brand and design …. I am not without other tools - I already have already have a circular saw, drills ( several), drivers. I just need a chop saw to cleanly and consistently cut these puppies to length….

fwiw … my contractor friend says to avoid the sliding saw configuration … the mechanism does not hold up.

I have a pawn shop near me … I will go there today

If you're just looking for a saw to chop a pile of 2X4's up I think either of the brands you mentioned are fine. You'll need a larger model like a 12" to handle 2x8's but those can just as easily be cut with a circular saw. I'd be a little leery of the stands with stops. Most of the stops wobble like crazy and it's really difficult to get consistent and accurate cuts. The stands themselves work great (I've got a Dewalt stand) but I used the stops very little in my years in construction, much preferring to just mark my pieces.

Went to a local pawn shop, and got a 10” rigid at what seemed a seasonable price.

now I need to find a way to get the lumber home to start cutting it… my little two door mini can do a lot … eight foot studs and 4x8 sheets of plywood are a little beyond it’s capacity…

Buy something cheap but large at Home Depot. Rent the van to take it home. Stop on the way home at the lumber yard for the better lumber. Return van....

Lol … my comment about the mini was really meant as a joke … for more than a few pieces of course rent a truck to ferry the stuff home.

on the other hand, it is actually pretty surprising what you can do with a mini. You can fit individual pieces up to seven feet or so inside. I do have a roof rack, and you can certainly strap on a handful or more of ten foot 2x4s onto that .. but in this case, given the quantity of shelves I need to build, the truck rental will be necessary. Luckily I have both a Lowe’s and a Home Depot pretty much just around the corner from me..

Pack horse?

Your in truck country now. Time to trade in the Mini?

I remember you recently made a big move - did you move from "minneapolis, mn" to a different place? OR, did you move to "minneapolis, mn"? For some reason Minneapolis, MN doesn't sound like "horse country" - but I know nothing about that area.

Good luck on your new shop - that's an exciting time. We'll enjoy the journey with your new shop, just like we did with Stacy's new shop build.

From minneapolis to Louisville ky. Definitely more horse country … but probably a wash in terms of “ truck” country. A LOT of people in mn like 4WD trucks in mn because of the snow…

we are still getting settled into the new home. It will be a while before I get to set up the shop, because there is so much else to get done … and also because there is absolutely no electrical in the unfinished basement area … well, I did just put in a 15 amp circuit for a couple outlets and option to branch off for overhead LED lights, and maybe my air cleaner - though I need to look at the amperage draw for that … and the 15 amp circuit gives me a bootstrap capability to power some tools ( like the chop saw) to build the storage shelves and the shop furniture.

the builder put in some weird loose insulation around the top part of the foundation .. I have to figure out how to deal with that. I might well post some photos and ask how to deal with the space. I’m so used to thinking about benches against walls … but I might actually opt for some freestanding benches parallel to the wall benches. But like I said, gonna be a while 😒

I was thinking you'd moved South, but your profile still shows the north. Louisville, KY is a LOT more South, but I still think "up north" for KY. I've lived most of my life South of I-10 Interstate hwy in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Fla. I grew up way up in north Alabama, but I guess that's still pretty much the South? :)

Yes, please do post photos and keep us updated on the build and problems. Stacy and couple other folks did that and I (and many other folks) enjoyed the journey. Everybody LOVES to offer advice :)

Thanks for the reminder .... I will update my profile, BUT I just looked at that, and do not see a way to do so. I'll keep looking .... or maybe stacy (or someone else) will see this and guide me....

Funny to hear you say "way up north in north alabama. all things are relative i guess :-)

Yeah .... I will post photos. I have never seen this "just a few feet of loose insulation" at the top of the foundation. Not sure if it is a local code thing, but it is definitely a PITA in terms of using that wall space .... especially where the grinder is located, as fire prevention (and dust collection) is a must.....

click on your screen name at top of page, then in the dropdown you'll see "account details" - that will give you access to make changes
