Tools rubbing on an Alox Soldier?

that's helpful information. i'm not exactly sure what a "feeler gauge" is though...do you mind explaining?

I'm not a mechanic but let me give it a shot. The feeler gauges I'm referring to are a set of various thickness metal shims that you will slide between two objects when testing for fit. When it won't fit you know the size of the "gap" or space between. In this case my .0030 in. shim fit but .0045 in. did not. I "inherited" these gauges somewhere along the way and don't know very much about them.

got it. thanks for that. i'm curious what the space reduces to when you have the bottle opener/screw driver open in the half stop position (as described in my earlier post in this thread). if you've got the time and don't mind, that is :p

When I place the bottle opener in the the half stop position it appears that it is indeed in contact with the main blade. Not at the tip however. Approx 0.5 in back on the main blade is where the contact is made. After an hour of playing, measuring, tweaking, opening and closing I still find no marks or marring on either of the blades. It seems that there is enough lateral flex in the main blade as to gently slide against the opener and to the side. Is this ideal? Probably not. When viewed from above it does appear that there is enough room for the blade to rest without touching. Of course, if there is contact I would rather it be with the opener and not the awl. I have a Camillus BSA Scout pattern with a vertical gouge on the back side of the main blade from contacting the awl on opening and closing. Sorry, got OT a little.

This is my first Soldier and as such I have nothing to compare it to. If the tool contact is an issue at all, it is not enough for me to send it back. I'll leave the rest up to you.

The old style soldier is the only alox that went away. The Wenger SI and the rest of the Vics are still in production from what I can tell. I do not have insider information however. Unfortunately, I suspect that Wenger may drop the SI before too long. Hopefully, I am wrong. I prefer the bail over any keyring and I like the legacy of the "genuine swiss army knife".
