Hey guys. Im wondering what you guys use for making the edge on your blade. I just want to know if y'all use like a simple disc grinder? Or a CNC? Or what?

The reason I'm asking this is because your guys knives look amazing compared to mine.( yours look amazing anyway). I don't know if it's just the steel or what.

Thanks.

There's people making beautiful knives with a $5 file or a 10,000+ CNC. I started out with a $10 1/4hp motor with a grinding wheel on it. Even the guy using the file or even a cheap circular grinder can make a nice knife. Just takes more patience.

I can tell you to get the best grinding setup you can afford, can't stress it enough. I would say many here are using a KMG or Bader grinder. The Pheer and Wuertz grinders are becoming a bit more popular too. On the lower end a Craftsman 2x42 is tough to beat.

I think the minimum tools are: Hand, eye, brain and some type of abrasive. The more you practice, the better the first 3 become. For the abrasive, you could use a rock or you could use a $10,000 machining system.

I personally use a 2x72 belt grinder the most followed closely by sandpaper.

If you want a rough sharp tool you can make one pretty quickly (a few hours) but if you want a high quality custom knife its a pretty detail oriented task so a lot of time hand sanding and fitting pieces just right is involved. Personally I love both the super nice fit and finish pieces of art some make and also the brute de forge look that others make!

I use a belt grinder, angle grinder, dremel, files, but most of all for the finishing work i use hand sanding i start out with 80 grit and wd40 moving all the way through all the grits until i get the finish i want which i usually around 1000 grit.

For hand sanding i have a 3/8" thick peice of left over g10 that is 8" long and 1 1/2" wide the two ends are rounded so it does not hurt my hands when doing all that work. I wrap a peice of sand paper around the middle of the g10 and hold the ends of the g10 while pinching the ends of the sand paper on top.

This prosses takes a long time and a lot of sand paper but it works and your knives will come out looking like you want them to. Hope this helps. I got this prosses from another thread on this forum. It has a very information video to watch i suggest watching it.

Look up HAND SANDING, OR HAND SANDING TECHNIQUES?
