Toothy Edge Maintenance?

it's rather vague when referencing the amount of tooth you prefer to a grit, unless you specify the exact abrasive, brand, and model.
When I think of toothy I think of Ankerson and his extensive blade alloy rope cutting tests.
So for me toothy is 320 to 400 grit but about 40 micron in Silicon Carbide that is on the harder side (some SC stones are soft and not as desirable for a number of reasons).

Many here like to go much more coarse on the order of 100 to 150 grit.
I find for cardboard this coarse of an edge takes on and holds paper fragments so it isn't my first choice.

A 120 grit coarse edge will take benefit of some honing on a 5000 or even on a 8000 grit stone. The aim isn't to reduce the size of the teeth but to remove weak teeth and align strong teeth. See it as a cleaning, a bit of order in the chaos a low grit stone sets on an edge.

Dan.
