Toothy or polished bevel?

My theory is that a 'toothy' polish is simply a polished edge not finished.

Sharp is determined by how accurately the two edges come together and polish provides, when done right, the edges to come together more closely.

Just my two pennies.

I don't frequent this forum, but this thread keeps popping up, so I'll jump in. I usually stop at the fine side of a Norton Economy stone now. Either that or the Sharpmaker medium rods. I like a high polish, and have never had issues with it not having "bite", but I wanted to keep my sharpening to a 2 step/stone process, so it's 1000 grit King, followed by 204 medium rods, or Norton Economy coarse and fine. I gave up stropping years ago. I will occasionally finish my White #2 blades on a King 4000 grit stone and my Salt 1 on a 0.3 micron lapping film, but not often.
