Top 10 edged tool innovations for survival purposes

Haha I think he's just saying there were solid companion carry knives way before the HEST ever came around. I think the recurve is definately an important disign, I wouldn't know who first to attribute it to but a long blade on a short knife is just sweet. I think the folding saw is a very simple yet useful tool for survival as well-don't know how old the first gen folding saws are (I'm sure older than me) but being able to pack a sturdy completely useful saw in the size of a large folding knife... that's just sweet. It's interesting to see the makers in their resepective subforums developing new grinds like Koyote's 'scandivex' scandi/convex combination, which undoubtedly has been used for centuries after practical grinding and sharpening, but to have someone define it is very interesting. Makes me wonder if small forge bladesmiths aren't the future of survival tool technology. Some other designs that really stand out to me are the Loveless style drop point hunter.

Wow, great subject and some excellent replies!

I would defenitely agree with a multitool remark. Also since the timeline for the innovation is not outlined - I would also mention a heat treating invention which was a huge step forward.

Swiss Army knives.

Them & Leatherman Multitools - they have many, many uses both in day to day tasks and in a survival situation. They are especially useful in a survival situation for people like me that EDC them - they may be the only tools I have WTSHTF! If you EDC them because they are useful day to day then that helps you to always have them on hand, which helps you in a survival situation.

I'd also add the scandi grind knife - VERY useful for woodcraft. It would be good to have one in a survival situation too - carving stakes & making traps for example would be much easier.

Neckknives like the Izula! Why? Because the most useful knife is the one you have with you and fixed knives are tougher than folding knives and if you carry a neck knife then you have a solid little cutting tool on hand when you get caught out in a bad situation.

The Machete - I don't know how many have been manufactured or how many are in use around the world, but it has to be a lot! This is a VERY successful design (kinda like the AK-47 of edged tools) and is in use all over the world.

I think in term of bladed tools some items would have to be:

The Multitool (Leatherman)

New materials for sheathing and the grips of knives (kydex, micarta, G10)

In terms of foldable pocket knives the advent of new materials to make the frames lighter and frame locks/liner locks stronger. (titanium, aluminum, new steel blends)

Serrated edges for easier cutting of certain material.

New steels for better edge retension and stronger knife blades in foldable pocket knives

I think forums like this are by far one of the best innovations for survival. When you weed through the b.s., there's a lot of valuable information to gain. I've learned a great deal from the experiences of others that I would have never obtained without generous, knowledgeable members.

For me the light tomahawk has it has down. Plenty of utility and plenty of defense, what more could a guy ask for?
