As 1999 comes to a close, let's hear your nominees for the best khukuri of 1999.

My vote goes to the 18 inch Banspati as top khukuri.

My vote is for the Millenium Special!

I think the prettiest one would be the Banspati.

And probably to Uncle Bills chagrin the Super Salyan has to be in there somewheres.
It just kinda grows on a fellow ya know.

Sanu forward curving with forged-into-the-steel symbols ( such as surya, chandra, tara ).

The Super Salyan won't come in first, but you can't ignore it and still have a top ten list.

And how can you forget Hanuman, the little rascal?

My vote goes to the Ganga Ram Special - 19th Century design and craftsmanship, built by a master from the early 20th, to become an heirloom of the 21st.

1.Ganga Ram Special, without hesitation!
2.Banspati 27'and 18'
3.Millenium Special
4.Chandan Handle 21'sirupati
5.Gelbu Special
6.Ram Bahandur Special
7.Super Salyan
8.Kaga Katne 8"

My vote goes for the Ganga Ram for the reasons given by Berkley. Though there are other khuks that I like a great deal, they lack the distinctiveness, the uniqueness, of the Ganga Ram, in my humble opinion.

My vote goes to the 18 inch Chainpuri as the beautiful blade and Kagas Kagnes as the cute
blade

My 1st vote: Ganga Ram Special - so far, I strongly believe that it is the best hand made blade of Khukuri - even though it has a very wide blade but it is so smooth - I nearly can not find any weavy blade surface - very little mark of forging!

My 2nd vote: Shop #1 12" Silver Mounted Horn Handled Dhankuta - very good quality - the handle design is simple and beautiful - the blade is also beautifully forged with very little weavy surface - the cho was beautifully cut - the scroll work was very neatly done.

My 3rd vote: Shop #1 BAS - In overall it was made in a very standard quality in each and every detail of the blade.

These my votes are base on those Khukuris which I currently have - my Gelbu Special and Kumar Kobra is not ready yet, my 25" Sirupati is not arrived yet - so, I might change my votes!

NEPAL HO!

Even though my budget didn't allow me to get one, the Ganga Ram Special is my nomination for number one, followed by the Gelbu.

But must admit I really love my Village Bhudhuni

My vote goes to standard 20" AK, my first and only HI khukuri (at least) so far. There must be more balanced, beautiful, or sturdy khukuris out there, but the effect/shock it gave me will not be exceeded hereafter.

To me, even though not the best of best, an AK, especially larger one, seems to represent HI atmosphere best with its simple beauty.

Let's wait for a Gelbu special, which I'm in wait list, to see how I will change. But I forgot this thread is top 10, not one!

I just received my 25" Sirupati + spotted deer horn handled CBKC! If I'm not wrong - 25" Sirupati is the work of Sanu - in general it is a great knife!

Pakcik Bill!
I just want to test my visual judgement ... please correct me if I make a wrong guess ... I believe the spotted deer horn handled CBKC is the work of Shop #1 ... am I correct?

Now I have Khuks from Shop #1, Shop #2 (BirGorkha) and Visiting Kamis! My evaluation on those Khuks is that those Khuks from Shop #1 are having a very standard high quality! The reasons are:
  • The detail works on the handle are excellent - the bolster, the ring carving and the buttcap are done & fix properly.
  • The detail works on the blade are also excellent - they are finely & geomatrically shaped according to the blade design.
  • The scrollworks are done in a more standard design with blade of shiva and a circle at the tip - even the brass inlays are finely done.
  • The H.I. logo in Devanagari are clearly & beautifully stamped.
  • The cho is properly & evenly cut - it looks just like a very beautiful cow track!
  • The blades are finely beveled - the width of the bevel is more or less the same along the blade.
  • The blade surface is properly & beautifully forged with very few weavy surface.
  • The surface is finely grinded and the finish is excellent.
  • I found out that the scabbards are also beautifully made - the brass tips are better & they were fixed properly to the scabbard.
  • I think the old frogs are better in design & workmanship than the superfrog!
Khuks made by Visiting Kamis are excellent as well ... but the detail works at certain part of the Khuks are out! For eample The GRS and 25" Sanu's Sirupati are having an excellent blades but the scrollworks are not done up to the Shop #1 standard! The handles are beautifully carved but still have blems here and there! The chos are not cut in a balance shape - I strongly believe that the cutting of the cho is very important to reflect that every part of the Khuk even the smallest part like cho is really & properly taken care by the Kamis team!

It seems I have changed my mind - now, my votes for top few Khuks are:
    1. 12" Shop #1 Silver Mounted Spotted Deer Horn Handled Dhankuta.
    2. 15" Shop #1 BAS.
    3. 15" Shop #1 Ang Khola.
    4. 18" Shop #1 WW II.
    5. 20" Shop #1 Sirupati.
    6. 18" Shop #1 18th Century.
    7. GRS.
The conclusion - I MIGHT BE WRONG IN MY JUDGEMENT!

      NEPAL HO!

#1 on my list is the Gelbu Special.
# 2 is my 15"AK
# 3 is the Super Salyan

Ok, mine is a short list!

MIke

I only have the Gelbu Special so far, but my vote is:

1. Gelbu Special
2. Ganga Ram Special
3. Millenium Special

I'll have to add the Gelbu Special Blem that I got a few days ago to my list.

currently:

1. 18 inch Banspati
2. Gelbu Special
3. Kumar Liteweight 21 inch Ang Khola
4. 25 inch MamaBura Sirupati
5. 15 inch Mother's Sirupati
6. HI Bird and Trout Bowie
7. Villager Bhudhuni

I've yet to get my Ganga Ram Special or Millennium special or other khukuris I have on order so this could change.

Harry

P.S. I find it interesting that the HI Bird and Trout Bowie has yet to make any significant inroads on this list.

The 18" Banspati is really awesome! The handle fits me very nice. The only thing is my list always changes.
