Top 100 Items to Disappear First During a National Emergency

I'm going to an old time family reunion in August, and it's my turn to butcher the hog. Lot's of fun, but lots of good learning for me. For storing food, the LDS churches have some incredibly good web sites and tips.

No, I'm not Mormon, but I do appreciate their thinking along these lines! :D

Holly crap Sodac Neat list, they may want to include some insulin as after that year they'l all be diabetic. 240 lbs sugar for 2 people eek.

A little bland I would add a lot of spices and canned fruit and veg as well as dried. Very short in the oil fats dept add 100lbs of canola oil. I assume meat is hunted as a few cans of tuna will be gone in days.

Interesting they dont mention how to utilize the wheat as its not easy without proper equipment and know how.

40. Big Dogs (and plenty of dog food)
...
100. Livestock

Big dogs are a horribly inefficient use of resources; too extravagant in a real long term survival situation. At that point they become nothing more than livestock. I'd be more inclined to own/acquire a smaller to medium sized dog, one that would still serve watch duty, while being better able to fend for itself or at least supplement it's own dietary needs.

That comes out to 575 calories per person per day, the equivalent of 2 1/2 cans of soda. Most Americans consume significantly more sugar than that.

I guess we all need to start practicing, huh? There is an excellent resource for that information called Hillbilly Housewife. If you have nothing in the house except corn meal and thumb tacks I guarantee she has a way to make biscuits. No membership required, it's all free, including shopping lists and hundreds of recipes.

As a man raised by a single dad I am quite possibly the world's worst cook, so if I can make bread from scratch anybody can.

Good list, think I saw it over at mil.com forum.
I use unleaded gas in my lanterns, it works but will clog the generator if you leave it in. Another way to cook, you can make a hobo stove and a small piece of old tire as fuel. Most people won't think of tires and they are everywhere. Put your trashcans under the downspout for water, the old rainbarrel. toilets will flush if you pour your waste water in the bowl.

That's a very good point! I need to learn more about cooking and canning, etc. I'll check out the Hillbilly Housewife link. As others have said, it's interesting to talk to the old timers. Lots of them still around that lived before electricity, they have a ton of good insight that will be gone in a generation.

You need an Australian Kelpie :)
Tough, fast, alert, great hunters. You should see mine with rabbits ;)

anybody can.

2/3 of Americans are overweight so this makes sense.

Having some extra pounds when you need it may not be a bad thing I guess.

Hmm where's my Ding Dongs haha.

The commentary on how batteries sell is the reason I converted a couple C-sized Maglites to LED. Also convinced me to start giving Safelights as gifts. I'd highly recommend the Safe-lights for those barely touched 9V cells. EDCDepot sells them for about ten bucks, sometimes with an extra thrown in. Hundred hours on low, twenty high, strobe mode, and always on indicator light that lets me find it in a bag or in the dark. Plugs aside...Not for outdoor use, recommended for area lighting, keep your 9V cells after you put new ones in the smoke detectors and your stash will keep the Safe-Lights going for a year easily.

Heard good results from people freezing large amounts of water in their freezer in case of a blackout. There's your back up water supply, and it'll also keep your frozen foods going a bit longer longer with the ice in there.

94. Wine/Liquors (for bribes, medicinal, etc,)

For bribes? Time to leave the Dungeons and Dragons world and enter reality lol

Then again I could be swayed by a good bottle of anything with high alcohol content...
