Hey all,

I currently rotate between a Buck Spitfire, Kershaw Emerson, CRKT m-16, and Spyderco Delica 4 FRN. What is another knife I could add that would round out my collection? I have a fondness for tanto blades, and prefer a half serration, but am open to all suggestions. Have been mowing over a Cold Steel Voyageur, an M-21, and a something from Zero Tolerance (but don't have the money really.) And.....GO!

I rotate a Buck Vantage Pro, Case Sway Back Jack, GEC 66 in burnt stag, CSC Pinch Lockback in buffalo horn, and a CRKT Eros.

You gotta have a ZT0350. Tried and true workhorse.

At some point you'll end up with one of these. Chris Reeve Sebenza. The best of the best in many areas.

Hmm. Victorinox Trekker/GAK, Gerber Harsey Air Ranger II, Mora 911 Quicksnap, Buck 112, Roselli Vaarinpuukko. My regular rotation.

There are some others that play supporting walk on roles, but not often: Buck stockman, Buck 110, a couple of Dawsons. And my new favorite toy, Cold Steel sax machete. Gonna have to do a review of it soon.

Will put up pics later.

Most recently, my most carried ones are:
Victorinox Yeoman
Kershaw Composite Blade Leek
ZT 0560CBCF
Benchmade Ritter Mini-Griptilian
Spyderco Caly3 CF

Not counting Leatherman Fuze which is on my belt daily along with an LED mini mag lite:

1. Spyderco Delica in VG-10
2. BM Mini Grip with the Spyder Hole in 154CM
3. Kershaw Skyline in Sandvik 14C28N
4. Kershaw Cryo in 8Cr13MoV
5. BM 810-1401 Contego in M390

Runner ups: Kershaw Thermite, Kershaw Blur Tanto HS, Kershaw Leek, Camillus Hustle

I carry a Benchmade Contego and a Leatherman (Wave or Fuse) at work and a Benchamde Griptillian off work most days. Often I carry a Leatherman PST in addition to the Griptillian as well. I often carry a Case Trapper or a Victorinox Tinker if I am wearing dress clothes and a visible pocket clip is not acceptable. In the woods or on the Boat I carry one of three Moras depending on what I am a doing, A No 1, No 2/0, or a Companion. I also often have a Leatherman of some sort on me once again depending on what I am doing.

Seeing as how you have some capable knives and are looking to "round out" your collection how about a multi tool of some sort? Or a nice gentleman's slip joint? I find the tools come in handy more often than my blades many days. How about a fixed blade for use outside of the city?

Too many options out there to get a definitive answer, just some suggestions. You have some very capable knives so it appears your bases are covered and the new knife is for fun anyway. Good luck.

Well, to answer your question, I'd go with a Cold Steel Recon 1, tanto tip. But I wouldn't recommend the half serrated model because, quite frankly, Cold Steel's serrations suck. Badly. They get clogged easily and they are absolutely impossible to sharpen....

Actually, I would strongly recommend against buying ANY knife half serrated. Either go full or none IMO. Half serrated knives suck (IMO, of course...) because there's not enough serrations to be usable for their function, and there's not enough non serrated blade to fulfill it's function either. It's like a knife that tries really REALLY hard to do both things (cut fibrous tough material with the serrations and slice other stuff cleanly with the plain edge) but doesn't do either function worth a damn. When I see a half serrated knife I instantly think "this guy doesn't know a damned thing about knives", or "nice knife Bubba Joe Billy Bob Clampett".

<sarcasm>That is all just "IMO" of course. It is absolutely not based on years and years of usage, and trial and error, and research, and facts about how blades work and stuff or anything. Also IMO, you should cut things with the edge of the knife instead of the spine  .....</sarcasm>

Aaaaaanyway, moving on.... To answer your thread's title, the top 5 production knives I carry (not counting customs) are as follows:

1. Al Mar Sere 2K

2. Cold Steel Recon 1 mini

3. Busse Basic 9

4. Becker BK17

5. Swamp Rat Ratmandu

Whew! That was tough! Most of my knives are customs. I really hadn't realized it until now.

I have waaaaay too many knives to have a regular rotation, but a couple of knives that have been seeing a lot of pocket time recently have been my Spyderco Dice, Spyderco Chaparrel, CRKT Drifter, and Kershaw Skyline in S30V.

If you really want to try a ZT, try the 0770CF. It's much lighter than the average ZT, has a blade thin enough to be a strong slicer, but it's still tough enough to handle most tasks. Oh, and it flips great deassisted. I personally hate tanto and partially serrated blades, but if you really must do that to yourself, you can grab a Tanto/Serrated Blur for about $50, or an RJ II for even cheaper.

Currently.
1. Zero Tolerance 0560

2. Spyderco Endura 4 FFG, PE

3. Spydero Byrd Cara Cara 2, PE

4. Spyderco Persistence, PE

5. Kershaw Scallion, PE, modified tip.

My recommendation based on your collection would be a ZT 0550 or 0566.
Pricey, perhaps but both are well worth the money and can be had relatively cheaply if you shop carefully and/or keep an eye on the exchange.

I too was fond of Tantos at one point but quickly lost interest in them as my addiction grew. If you're dead set on tanto and part serrated a Kershaw Blur would be right up your alley, give you a chance to try some upgraded steel AND, kershawguy has some Blems of these in stock. Absolute steal of a price and Dave Anderson runs a tight ship.
