I am trying to find a really good 4" folder. I like the knife I just recently got, which is the Camillus Heat. Have only used it a few times to open a few cardboard boxes. I have decided to opt for something similar, but with a more bright SS type blade. Is there such a thing in Cold Steel or other brand which would make an excellent choice for a tactical knife, yet without the usual blacked out tactical finish, and no serrations??
Thanks.

Depends on how much you want to spend, my personal favorite would be the combo edge police model from spyderco, go with the vg-10 steel. Another slick choice would be the kershaw bump, ti handles come in two colors blue and green, although the blade steel on this one is s30v, it is not a 4 inch blade. If you want to go really big, the benchmade skirmish is a superb choice, 4.25 blade, ti handle and a rock solid integral lock(framelock), excellent all-around knife.

i just got the lonewolf harsey t2 with walnut scales and an s30v blade with a really nice satin finish and no serrations.the lockup is way solid and it has a smooth action. i am pretty satisfied with it and it costs me about 200.00. i would highly recomend it.-fed

Benchmade 710 in M2 steel. See Joe Talmadge's article on edge profiles for the Axis folder to optimize if you get one with a thick edge.

Lots of good choices there, and I'm sure more to come. I'll throw in my $.02 worth and say a Strider AR :D First knife in a long while to tickle my fancy this much!

Try a Kershaw Bump, mine is everything I would expect from a non-tactical looking folder, besides it performs much better ;)

I really dont have experience with many of these, but i can tell you that the 710 feels pretty good. It is a nice knife. When you say 4" folder I think: Military and Police by Spyderco, and 710 and AFCK or TSEK by benchmade.

There are tons of options.
Strider, Swamp Rat are the higher end beat em all knives that'll last forever.
Cold Steel is a nice midend.
Spyderco and Benchmade will make you happy but can be pricey.

Check out my big post here (bout halfway down):

There's a lot of options out there, find a knife site: www.newgraham.com is one of the best) and start looking through stuff to find what you like.

Not sure what the price range limit is, but from my experience I can recommend the Strider SMF, Benchmade 710\Skirmish\806D2, Reeves Sebenza, Spyderco Manix\Chinook\ATR\Military.

I like the Benchmade Skirmish 630 in this size range.
Great blade for the buck :)

I'd suggest the Spyderco Military. It packs a lot for less weight and not that much dollars. Something heavier ? Manix, from same company...

I'm an anti-liner-lock bigot, so can't go with many of the otherwise-well-done knives recommended above. But, if I weren't in this condition, I'd definitely look at knives like the Military.

As it is, my top choice would be the Benchmade Axis 710. Although these days, the Spyderco Manix would give it a good run for its money. The 710 is much easier to carry, which might give it the nod for me for EDC. But feature-for-feature, I like the Manix better.

Since you don't want a black finish, that rules out the BM 710HS and 806D2, which would be two of my top choices. Have you considered the Camillus Dominator? It's identical to your Heat but with an S30V blade and titanium handle.

How much are you willing to spend? If you're undecided about the materials and features you want, let us know a price range. Otherwise you'll see knives from under $50 to over $400 touted here as top choices.

At this point probably looking at a "street" price of about $125.00 which does limit things.

How about a Strider SNG? AR? SMF? GREAT knife! Tough as hell!
I would also recommend a Kershaw Bump.

few suggestions:

gerber applegate/fairbairne: basically a folding applegate/fairbairne combat knife , 4.5" blade. it has some serrations, however.

buck strider 880: 4" blade, ATS-34 steel, G10 scales, titanium liners, in tanto or spear point.

SOG pentagon elite II: 5" blade, folding fighter also similar to the applegate/fairbairne style. small serrations on one of the edges, however.

CRKT M21-04: very cheap (you could get 4 for your budget), works great, great design. 4" AUS-8 blade available in drop-point non serrated.

ah, crap - i missed the part about a 'more bright SS blade'. pretty much everything i mentioned is bead-blasted. but 'tis nothing you cant buff/polish to a shine if you invest a bit of time :)

personally i hate the bead blasting. its touted by manufacturers to 'improve' corrosion resistance, but it does just the opposite. the rough finish holds more moisture and seems more prone to rust to me.
same goes for the black finish on pretty much anything in the 'tactical' genre these days, and the mandatory serrations. i really dont like them - and i believe every knife should be available in a plain blade version sans black finish before they start adding these as options. if they want to blacken the steel, thats fine, but keep *paint* and other coatings off my blades.
