Me too igazi.
For African survival you need:
Skills, Knowledge, and an AK. Or a Lamborghini. I forget these days.

@ Gadgetaholic, feel free to add your substitutions. I'm listening (reading) ;)

I'll take the Lamborghini and skills. After a few hot laps to either the beach or mountain road, I'm sure I'll have attracted enough attention to find a buyer for said Lamborghini.
I could then afford to buy all the survival gear I ever wanted. (and then some) :D

13. Back-up knife or 2 usually a SAK

If there is high ground in that forest, magnification could be useful.

I don't discount the importance of a good pair of binoculars or even monocular, but I just don't consider it as an "essential" piece of gear. They would however be a great asset if you're searching for game, water sources, routes, potential rescue or potential threats. Having that magnification could save you a lot of time and energy...both important resources in any stressful situation.

I do carry bino's in my kit, but they just don't make my own personal "top ten" essentials if I was forced to choose.

exactly, ditto for frying pan, fish hooks, etc

I'm seeing a compass in a lot of folks top eight ... why is this ?

If we're talking straight survival tools I would consider many other items above the compass.

Top eight survival tools and only one person mentions a firearm....and they list it at # 9?

Looks like we are dealing with some lightweights here.:D

But seriously, why not have the firearm as item #1, then work your way down?

firearm
knife
machete
rope
compass
poncho
water container
fire starter

I think #7 is extremely important being that it is likely that we would run out of #1.

Now thats funny right there, I don't care who you are!

But seriously, why not have the firearm as item #1, then work your way down?

Since your number 1 priority is usually going to be shelter, does this mean that you are expecting there to be someone to rob so that you can acquire shelter?

Or are you thinking that survival equipment means equipment for survival from an aggressive attack by zombies?

. . .
But seriously, why not have the firearm as item #1, then work your way down?

Start with the fact that 75% of wilderness deaths are caused by about equal portions of falls, drownings, and heart attacks and reason your way from there. Aspirin makes more sense than a firearm.

Oh. Missed the other post. Zombies. ^____^

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet:

You need a good pair of boots! Unless you walk with all fours i can't comment (that will make you speed typing demon)

You missed thread in which a number of posters decided footware is not necessary. ^___^

The good thing is that we are all taking it for granted that we are fully clothed - for me that means I must have my multi-tool & SAK on me, because I don't put on my pants without also equipping my EDC tools.
