Top Five (maybe 7, lol) and that's it!!!

Great choices, Harry! I'm beginning to think you like straight edges... šŸ¤”šŸ˜ Also, kudos for keeping up with the same knife for that many years! Oh, the stories that thing could tell! šŸ‘
Thank you very much my friend AND yes I do like straight edges . When I was working I was initially in the construction division and then in the agriculture division and traveling was sometimes part of my job . My wife and I have been fortunate to be able to travel a bit too so that old knife has a fair number of miles on it . It has served me very well .

Challenge accepted Chris, though I don't like it! I was going through all of my traditionals the other night and thought -which I've thought many times- I should slim it down. If I ever do, I don't think I'd get down to just five. Maybe 10.... either way, here are my selections for this exercise.

I figured if this was real, than I'd need to cover some bases rather than just go for my out right favorites, albeit there is a lot of crossover there.

Best all around knife is the Cattle. Honestly, if my house was on fire and I could only grab one knife, this would be it.

Slim and purdy, this guy is probably my favorite food/steak knife - I prefer a spear blade for food slicing.

Next is the church knife, small and non-threatening, but more than capable.

It was tough not to go with the TC 15 sheepsfoot as a utility pick, but the Viper just has a bit more to offer. I also cannot deny that red linen micarta.

I was thinking #5 should be a fixed blade, but I cant say no to the knife that is literally with me every day. On the keychain, in a pouch, or in the watch pocket, it's called the minichamp for a reason.

If I upped it to 7, I'd add in a mid-sized fixed blade and a case copperlock.

OK. I did it. I narrowed it down to five. Most of my knives are better than anything my father or grandfathers carried. They're better than anything I could have imagined for myself as a kid who has always been interested in sharp and shiny things. These are the ones that I can make do with if I had to.

First is this GEC #73 Scout. Given to me as a Father's Day present, it is my most treasured knife. I thought it lost, but I was reunited with it yesterday after more than a year apart. It stays until the day I pass it on.

A lightweight belt knife, this puukko is among my favorite users.

I don't often use a chopper, but when I need one they sure are handy. Plus, khukuris are a sentimental favorite, being the reason I found BladeForums in the first place.

I'm keeping this Christians as a Sunday, go-to-meetin' knife

I need this bowie for the same reason I need my semiauto rifle. Because I am an ornery, free man under arms.

Ok, ok…so after all those nonsensical posts from me…I have narrowed it down to the five knives I could currently live with. There are two fixed blades, because they are so useful. Both have seen light use. There are 3 slipjoints, a single blade, double blade and triple blade. Although I do find a lot of knives useful and attractive, a couple of my choices are also reminders of friends, which means more to me than knives I ā€œjust picked up.ā€ These are all comfortable in my hand in use and beautiful to my eye. Ok, time to stop talking and just post already!

I would add these two if 7 was allowed. :)

Sorry for the wait…but it was fun. Now to get some sleep…

I’ll try to play along.šŸ˜‚ I don’t have a group shot of them so I’ll post individual knives.

First- some sort of mini trapper because I just love the pattern. While this probably is my least carried mini, the thin 1095 blades are super sharp. Not only good as an edc but it would make a good small game knife.

57804EEE-9DAD-43F3-B176-17671E7670CD.jpegTwo and three I’m going to go with a couple of stockmans. This was a little more difficult due to each stockman I own are different enough that I like different things about them.

Number 4- Helle 75 Jubileum. I just like this knife. I think it could be used as a good all arounder.B62BA1A1-D01D-4B33-B55C-4EBFC33EEFA2.jpeg

Number 5- Buck 119- Just because.šŸ˜‚F559A254-8DF7-40B4-98D9-F89281D778DA.jpeg

If we add 6 and 7 I’ll add another stockman and the little mini alpha for small game.8BB41EAA-5809-44E8-8DF1-A9D9704CC078.jpeg45792D02-5E47-4F97-9EE2-F09F5AF69845.jpeg

The Pocket Carver is a beautiful knife but this one on the picture is the most beautiful i've ever seen.

Dan.
I agree, Dan! I have a few iterations of the Pocket Carver. This white bone one, engraved for me by my friend Jake, is my favorite and the one that sees the most pocket time. :)
Thank you for the kind words.

Well, Gents.. I tried to do a quick tally of the various categories (brands, blades, patterns, etc). Ask me how that worked out.šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø Took me about 12 seconds to realize "Pfft!!!"... ain't no way. 🤣

But, here's what we've got so far based on the most popular brands and general categories:

1st - Great Eastern Cutlery (by a lot!)
2nd - Buck (barely 😬)
3rd - Case
4th - Sheffield
5th - Swiss Army

I expected to see GEC, Case, SAK, Buck, and Sheffield... in that order. Who knew?? šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Now, by most popular "general" patterns:

1st - Stockman (it's not even close!)
2nd - Med/large single blade clips
3rd - Various fixed blades
4th - Lambs
5th - Various SAK configurations

Shocking observation: the Buck 112 seems to be "go-to" pattern for many folks! I didn't realize these were so popular.

I'll try to come up with a better way to tally these up (that doesn't take 83 days to complete) if the thread continues to gain traction!

Thanks to all who have posted! 😁

Congrats to your friend. Very beautiful engraving.

Putting all sentiment aside, I could probably get by with just a single knife -an Opinel 8 in carbon steel. Big enough for most things, small enough for most things, unsurpassed cutting performance, light and comfortable in the hand. I might not want to clean fish with it because of the smell, but that happens so infrequently it’s not really an issue 🤣.

I thought about this some more. As long as I could keep about 9 additional knives with sentimental value stashed away unused in a drawer, I think these 5 would meet all my typical use and carry needs, which could be put into 5 categories (from top in picture):
  1. A pocketable multitool
  2. Something fun my inner child finds cool
  3. Something for harder use but still pocketable
  4. A slipjoint for more discrete carry
  5. A fixed blade for outdoors, hobbies, and general utility.

I actually just bought the Mora to complete set 🤣. My 6th need - a small blade for detail work - could be covered by the multitool or slipjoint. I’m not wedded to the Buck as a slipjoint option - I would prefer something the same size in carbon steel.

I somehow missed this thread.

It’s a tough one and I’ll be hypocritical by including one I don’t use. I’m also not including any fixed blades.

My favourite knife is easily my Sean Yaw. I carry and use it sometimes but I’m always scared of losing it. My wife has been instructed to bury it with me so that one will always be by my side.

I really love the bunny knife, good Australian history, comfy and attractive in hand and it’s been a good rabbit skinner for me. My favourite GEC.

Cosimo is a beautiful knife, and the castrator is quite possibly my single favourite blade on any knife I own.

The city stock is a just a beautiful knife to look at, carry and use.

The top laguiole I don’t carry often but whenever we go out for wine and nibbles or a picnic it’s my go to.

The hunstman jigged lamb is my newest acquisition and is a replica of an old Sheffield lamb. I really love this knife, despite being 3 1/3ā€ closed the strong sway makes it very comfortable.

Lastly the large laguiole, I’ve carried it but never used it. Has some beautiful filework on the spring and has interior mammoth handles. Most knives in my collection get used moved. It’s the one exception.

Love the engraved bolsters on the pocket carver!
