top five traditional folders must have

5 shadow patterns marked : Dowell,Menefee , Hampton, or Bose (T or R)
-Vince

I think Vince needs a new title: "The Shadow". :D
Or maybe "The Shadow Master" to avoid any potential copyright problems.

For me, there are no absolute 'must haves' for a collector. We live in good times - there are dozens of excellent makers, each with a multitude of patterns to select from. Saying you 'must have' a few select examples is really limiting. It's like saying you 'must have' a Porsche to be considered an automotive enthusiast.

ONLY FIVE:eek:

These could be used as a platform to build on:D

Slimline Trapper (CASE)
Large Stockman
Teardrop Jack (Queen)
Swayback Jack (CASE)
G.E.C. 73 Liner lock

These are bare essentials , a whole load more are knocking on the door with conviction:thumbup: (as you'll soon find out..)

Trapper in carbon.
SAK classic.
SAK alox model (take you pick).
SAK camper type or boy scout knife in bone.
Peanut.

If I was a sane man that would be all I would ever need as far as folders. :D

If we were choosing six, I would add a Buck 110.

Edited to add.
These are not my "favorites". :D

Gotta have a nice red bone and a green bone XX era Case. You choose the pattern. The old Case knives are outstanding.

Also a Schrade Walden era knife. Even though most are jigged delrin, they are terrific knives, and the scales look very nice IMHO.

When I think tradional I think slip joint, but everyone should own at least one Buck 110 and 112. Built like a tank, and a terrific value. Buck is a great family owned company that sems to have very tradional values

Tough one.

Queen/DB small barlow.
Case cv peanut.
Case/Tony Bose ebony backpocket.

I can't believe I was the first to mention Opinel. At least I think I was after skimming through.

If we are talking patterns I would say:

Zulu Trapper
Dogleg
Warncliffe Trapper
Gunstock
Sodbuster

.

Id say 5 different patterns that float your boat. Its all about variety and picking what fits your personality. Some like multi bladed knives, some love singles, others like locking blades. It really doesnt matter, except that you like the pattern. I find myself drawn to single bladed patterns. Not sure why, but I tend to pick a knife based on a main blade that I use for everything. This is likely because this is what I have always done as any knife I have owned has one blade (my saks have many tools but only one blade :))

GEC Cuban Stockman
Queen Teardrop Linerlock
GEC Dogleg Jack
Case Texas Jack CV
GEC Toothpick

A prancing horse would help!

I'd have to go with these based on what I've actually handled and used.

Victorinox Soldier
Case Peanut in CV
Case Pen in CV
Schrade 34OT
Case Swayback Jack in CV

I'll start

Case Stockman
Sodbuster (Queen or Case)
Buck 110

Hope this will be a fun thread to see what is everyone favorite, plus will give me some ideas for some new purchase's :)

Moore Maker 5304 4 1/2" stockman
Case Large stockman

gotta love plenty of handle and a big marking blade :D

Peanut. And maybe a whittler pattern of some sort. I like the Cannitler best, but the seahorse runs a close second.

Rog

A peanut of course.

I still have my old Buck Woodsman for sheath knife duty.

A sak is around for tool use of need be. One in the glove box of the Tacoma, another in the emergency kit in my bag that goes on hikes and canoe outings.

Carl.
