Top grind on a Chute knife...how are you doing it?

I am planning on working on my first chute knife in the near future. I have made right at 750+ knives in my 25 or so years, but no chutes....

My question is how do you folks do that top grind along the spine of the knife? My buddies here mostly utilize a 3" round wheel on their grinders and either an 8" or 10" for the main hollow grind. I have both Bader and Wilton grinders and plan on purchasing a 3" wheel for the Bader if I can figure things out. I was envisioning an work arm for the 3" wheel like that is on my 8" wheel but don't see any wheels like that mentioned by Bader mfg. Their 3" wheels are made like the smaller wheels...3/4", 1", etc...supported on both ends. I fail to see how I would get a work rest under all that to support my hand while grinding. Any ideas????

Thanks in advance.

The first two chutes I did I used a 10" wheel for both top and bottom grinds. The last one I did, I used a 5" wheel for both. I do all my hollow grinding freehand, so I can't help you there.

Hope this helps...

The 4" wheel for the Bader runs on a bearing and shaft just like the other contact wheels instead of like a small wheel.

I have found that hand files are my favorite way to do top grinds. If hollow grinding
I use the same size wheel for both top and bottom grinds. I also grind freehand.

I have a Bader and the chutes I make I start with the 5" wheel on the bottom and use the 3" wheel for the top grind. The top grind is obviously narrower than the bottom master grind. I also freehand and it is not that difficult as they are easy to blend together as long as you don't go to high with the master or too low with the top grind line.
