Top Three Wilderness Survival books?

well based on the recommendations here I ordered (in addition to Mor's Bushcraft which was already on it's way) revised editions SAS and Survival Skills by Olsen

looks like I'll have a few more to read after those :)

If you can find it pick up a copy of Bushcraft by Graves. It has been out of print for years but is worth the effort to find a copy.

All said books are good....

For California however, there is only one BIBLE:

THE SURVIVAL SKILLS OF NATIVE CALIFORNIA
by Paul Campbell

All skills performed by indigenous tribes themselves. Everything, from baskets, to traps to fire, shelter, food, and much, much more.
Excellent photos.

I have many, but when I picked this one up, all else now just collects dust...

My personal top three of all time, in this order:

"The Ultimate Guide to Wilderness Living" by John & Geri McPhereson

"Bushcraft" by Mors Kochanski

"Woodcraft" by George "Nessmuk" Sears

The reason I don't include the Air Force, SAS and Ranger survival manuals is because I consider them SERE manuals instead of "wilderness" survival books.

My top three:

98.6 degrees - Cody Lundin
Bushcraft - Mors Kochanski

And either:

SAS Survival Handbook - John Wiseman
The Ultimate Guide to Wilderness Living - McPheresons

I have Les Strouds book but haven't read it yet. Hope to do so soon :).

Here's my top 3:
Raymond Mears - The Survival Handbook A Practical Guide to Woodcraft and Woodlore
Mors Kochanski - Bushcraft
Ellsworth Jaeger - wildwood wisdom

Hey paleojoe,

Not just for California - a lot of the stuff applies anywhere, and I agree 100% - one excellent book!!

Hey wildmike, it is available as a free download here. And you're right, another excellent book - one of the few available back then.

Doc thanks for that link. Sadly my copy gave up the ghost around 20 years ago.

You're welcome, glad I could help.

Happily, my copy's still alive and well. :D

I think you can get bushcraft books related to specific areas that would be more in depth then one holistic book. One of the many I have read is a book called Dont die in the Bundus written by a Col. of the then Rhodesian air force. It is specifically written for the Rhodesian (Zimbabwe) and South African climate that I think is a great book as it tells you what plants are edible etc.

At the end. The more you read the better.

A useful one (for the West Australian conditions obviously) is the WA Police "Aids to Survival" free download as a 120 page pdf. Doesn't seem to be acessible right now but not copyrighted and available ex google from many source

Doc

Absolutely applicable everywhere!
It has an emphasis on native California plant species, some are endemic to the whole of the U.S. and abroad, but would also require finding the 'native equivalent' in your own area... But the principles and methods are there!:D An excellent and rare collection utilized by native tribes...
