Tops Hammer Hawk Question

Hi all, I posted a similar question on the axe tomahawk and hatchet forum and got no responses. Thought I'd post it here.

Does anyone own a Tops Hammer Hawk? If so, have you taken the scales off and seen whether it is skeletonized or not? If it is skeletonized, to what extent?

You could very likely call or email TOPS directly, and get your question answered. I mean, if ANYONE would know, these are probably your guys.
 
Contacting TOPS is probably the best way to get an answer, but judging from their product description, I wouldn't expect it to be skeletonized.
Power and aesthetics combine to make an epic tomahawk. The Hammer Hawk is anything but a normal tomahawk. Throughout the design process, each feature was carefully thought out. It’s a full-tang, 3/8” thick piece of 1075, so it is not meant to be a light-weight ax.​
 
I'd guess not skeletonized at all .

It's a hawk so balance shouldn't be too head heavy . Need sone handle weight .

This is no ultralight . It weighs similar to others of this size and construction .

Strength and mass are needed for some of the POU .

IMO , it's attractive but kinda expensive .
 
OBOB said it best, straight from the product description. It is advertised as a heavy duty full tang Hawk, and the description even mentions a skeletonized backup knife, so I think if the Hawk itself was skeletonized they wouldve said as much.

Instagram post of their upcoming model: High Impact Axe. That thing is heavily skeletonized and it doesn't look like it's meant to be light either so just got me wondering about the hammer hawk as well.

Probably not skeletonized, but I think I'll email them just to be sure. It is one sweet looking hawk.
 
I doubt it's skeletonized at that weight -- 36.3 oz for the axe and 42.3 oz with the sheath.

It's really a crash axe with a short handle and ordinary steel. I prefer something a little tougher for a crash axe steel and something with a longer handle.

My crash axe is 18.25 inches long, with a solid, full-length tang of .25 inch 4041 steel and micarta scales. It weighs 31 oz. It takes the top off a 55 gal. drum fast.

The drawback of the solid tang is that it transfers vibrations to the hand, making it uncomfortable to use for long.

My Gransfors Bruks carpentry axe is also 31 oz, with an 18 inch wooden handle. Most of its weight is forward, where you want it. It will chop forever without killing your joints.

Real hawks will be a lot lighter. My GB British trading axe is 17.6 oz, with 19.75 inch handle.

If you like the Tops crash axe, go for it. It will be heavy and not meant for long use. The short handle will reduce its chopping ability. And I'd prefer a tougher steel for a crash axe. The sheath carry system is cool, but 42.3 oz.s handing off your belt will get your attention.
 
Tops got back to me (unexpectedly fast). Like you all thought, not skeletonized. Probably not gonna purchase it, just an item on my radar. A little too expensive for what you get imo. Very cool looking though.

@Twindog what crash axe do you have? (If you don't mind sharing.)

I just can't remember. I bought it from a custom maker here on the forum, but it was a while ago. I tried a number of searches, but came up blank.
