Tops Knives, HT any problem?

Fun to watch how quickly he managed to bang out a new knife from it with a few moments on an angle grinder, simply heating to non-magnetic and so on. I think he's a bit more nifty with an angle grinder than I am, but still, it should be encouraging to anyone else that wants to give it a try.

Never heard of a problem like that before--TOPS is generally more criticized as having designs that are a bit over the top, but I've never heard ANYONE say that they have a bad heat treatment. This one's clearly a fluke--as amusing as it is to watch on camera. :p

The test was extreme, but so are some of the claims. In a real survival situation no one with any sense is going to try to baton through a log like that...but I still think it should not have bend the way it did. The problem was not that blade eventually bend but that it bent out of shape which set it up to break maybe. That was pretty sad.
I think that there is something with the blade steel, HT or geometry that could be improved.

Extreme ?

Man ya should see what I smash my Swamprat Chopweiler through.
Most my knives go through stuff like that pretty regular, it must have been poor heat treat !

I'm with pitdog on this.. not that extreme, I accomplish much worse!
Not a proble for my TOPS Steel Eagle;)

I'm sure it was a fluke.. Looks like the knife wasn't hardened at all. He could have saved it by anealing, straightening and re heat treating. He didn't have to regrind it. When he had it hot in his forge he could have straightened the bent knife then pretty easily before hardening it.

I have had knives bend like that battoning through nasty wood, but they always came right back.. I also say bad heat treat on that 1, I would have sent it back.

probably a fluke, but did anyone see where he was hitting the side of the knife on the log to get it out? Whenever I hit a knot like that I stop and try to fracture around it. Probably a fluke but I'm sure TOPS would have replaced it.

And what did TOPS say about the knife ??? Complaints about a blade should first be answered by the maker before it's put on youtube or a forum. It is always possible to have a bad piece even with the best products !!

exactly

Wish more people would think this way.

Has anyone else seen any other TOPS fail like this, anywhere?

ive put my tops knife through worse stuff than that and it doesnt even dull. however i for the most part dont make a habit of batoning through knots

Love these tests where the tester is ham fisted. What on earth is wrong with people beating on tips of knives because they attempt to take too big a chunk out of a log, then have it rush through the log and hit the floor, great way to keep your survival knife sharp champ! Furthermore, why not spend 2 mins a make a couple of wedges and save yourself all the effort with the blades?

OT I know, but man it chaffs my ass to see the mongy way people do thing in so called instructional or informative vids on youtube.
