TOPS Knives Steel Eagle (two thumbs up)

I did not specifically asked about RC testing except the availability of Magnum. The video demo of a Steel Eagle 107D been put to as realistic a scenario at http://www.kongnam.com/index2.htm will prove beyond doubt of Top's commitment to hard core real world use. Incidently I have not use seen or held any of their products, but Brian's insightful and objective reviews and experience help me decide to go with Tops. I've a Tops BEST HP on order already :D Hope this helps :) Next will be the CQT Magnum....

My thoughts on Tops are that the steel they use should be easy to keep a constant RC through out large batches. I'd get one any day!! :D You may want to roundover the handle to add more cumfort but thats a personal preference.
I'd not be scared to get one. I am to receive a Tops to raise the shoulder on so it will have a thinner edge. I'll post my thoughts about them.

Watching Ron Hood chop through a frozen elk leg, bone and all with a SE 111 is impressive. There was no edge deformation at all.

Stop! Your going to make me get a Tops to beat up!!

Your blades are very impressive too!!! - cutting on the folding chair is equally unforgiving on any knife!!!

elevenn - a door or hood is pretty thin metal. Check out the folding chair on my site. Thats thick steel!

That's pretty impressive. Nice stuff you have there.

Thanks guys. I was REALLY surprised at just how much effort it took to get the edge to dent and start to fold over. It was the edge "hanging" up on the metal AFTER the dents started to happen that caused the edge to chip out. It took ALOT of force with a 2"x4" as a batton to get that chair cut out. Was more force than anyone would put there edge through.

Dont just think thicker steel is superior. My chair test was done with 1/8" stock. Its all in the heat treat I think.

I have one of those. A TOPS Pasayten Lite Traveller. It has gray micarta handles. I believe it was designed by Steven Dick, publisher of Tactical Knives magazine.

It was a little disappointing in some respects. The handle is quite full at the base (where your little finger sits), and this adds a lot to the weight of the knife. It feels too heavy to be called "Lite Traveller."

While it's only 1/8-inch at the spine, the full flat grind doesn't taper very steeply to the edge. So the edge behind the primary bevel feels thick.

This might be a great design for a "do-all" knife, but it just feels heavy and a little clumsy to me.

Just my impressions. Handle one before you buy if you can.

This is the same situation a friend of mine ran into with this knife. I was a dealer for Tops for several years and handled about 30 of their models. They and built for the job at hand and I would recommend them to would be buyers.

What is the name of that knife model pictured above, i would like to get one but i can't find it on equipped or TOPS web site. thanks.

Guys,
Brian's Magnum stories"seduced"me into buying one.Found a NIB "old"one
from a forum member,it does everything Brian says it does.Hmmmm, new is better,RIGHT"??Maybe I should sell mine & get a NEW one,or maybe I'll just wait until Brian gets one & gives a review.Either way, don't think I can wear this "old" one out! Thanks,Brian.

Howdy,

At least you got one, very high drool factor. According to Helen, the new Magnums will be available in about 3 months time.
In the meantime how about some pictures with your gear, close up. that include from other owners as well...
How about Brian start a TOPS forum?? on these hard use knives :D

My CQT Magnum is on my belt here....unfortunately it's out of camera range, but there's a couple ATC Ranger Spike Hawks visible... :D :D :D

Seriously, I'll put up some Magnum pics when I get a chance.

Has to be long enough to chop/split firewood: Blade must be at least 6.5 inches in length 7.5 is better. I don’t like carrying anything with an overall length of 13 inches.
Vermon - What exactly did you mean by this? I make a knife that has a blade of 7.5" and it has an overall of 13" or so. Just currious what you meant.....

I helped my man Bish out a little.
These should cut better now :D

Nice side by side pic. Which one would fair better in the woods, the Tracker or steel eagle ??

The tracker is a little lighter to carry. The steel eagle has a better tip. If it were me I'd go for there Condor Alert for woods use ;) Or any big knife in 3/16" thickness.
