TOPS Knives

Also, just as a slight addition, I have to agree with Esav and GoodGuy. I think you would be better off getting an Armageddon than the Tracker. Especially if you'll be carrying a smaller secondary blade. That's just my opinion though.

Anyone have opinions on TOPS knives good, bad, or indifferent, I have been looking at getting the Tom Brown Tracker, Walkabout, and a Desert Hawk. are they worth the money?

Does anyone have pictures they are willing to post of any of the 3 or all 3.

Thanks for the help.
What do you want to use the knife for? If you give me an idea, I could help suggest the best one for your needs. I have quite a few and could shoot pictures of the ones you are interested in. Just let me know. :D

I love many of TOPS other knives! :)

I just dont like the Tracker / WSK / Whatever, becuase its not very efficient at any given task. Thats NOT to say that it isnt useable, or well made.

I also have a thing against the Hoffman Harpoon. I WANT one, but im still unwilling to pay $80 for tiny sliver of 1095, and a bit of Paracord. :/

The rest of TOPS products, iv got no problems with :D

... at least a brief review on the Tops Tracker...

I have used a TOP's Steel Eagle, which is basically what happens if you take a knife and try to make it look as "tactical" as possible. The Tracker is even worse because many of its design elements are contradictory including a promotion for wood craft and a cross section intended to cut heavy guage steel. There is a reason why the praise of that knife consistently lacks references to benchmark knives.

to be honest with you i want it 'cause it looks neat and i thought if i bought it i would try it on the next camping trip and give it a run at skinning deer this season. but mainly because i want it but i would like to see some pictures of the other style WSk's that you own. I already have knives to fill the 2 rolls ill try it in (Hunting and Camping) but i thought id try it or better yet use them to talk myself into getting it.

P.S. someone said later to get the Armagedon, that is one of the ones i want to get, that the tracker and the walkabout and maybe a Desert Hawk.

thanks for the info

If you give me a bit of time I'll get you some images. Today I took my TOPS Knives over to a friend's place so that he can check them out. I don't have the full size Tracker, but have the next size down. The Desert Hawk is a great knife and feels good in your hands. Excellent choice. As for the Armagedon, I've not had the opportunity to check this one out. From everything I've heard, it is a quality blade.

Id be glad to wait on the pics HoustonTactical and Bear the Dog those are some mighty fine looking blades you got there.

I have a TOPS knives Armageddon for jungle use. Large blade, but the quality is really good. Crappy sheath though. TOPS looks after their customers. Money well spent.

Nemesis get the Tracker you want !!!
We can all sit here recommending a better knife for this purpose or that but at the end of the day all TOPS knives are top quality, all will last a lifetime but most important of all is that you really like this knife.
It is your hard earned money and if when you hold your new Tracker a big smile spreads across your face then it is worth it whether it is perfect for every application matters not(show me a knife which is perfect for every application and I'll show you my arse !).

The only legitimate negative comments I've read are that some of their blades are perhaps too thick and lend themselves more to tactical destruction than effective cutting.

That's not really a negative, it's a case of needing to match your knife to your own needs, which is the same problem I think people have with the Tracker.

that's more or less my experience with TOPS's as well. this especially goes for the large, heavy and thick models. i had 3 TOPS in the past, and still have one left, a steel eagle 107.

things i like about tops knives:

-the micarta handles are super awesome comfy and grippy
-pretty sharp right out of the box
-their kydex sheaths with positionable belt clips allow for lots of carry options
-1095 oldschool steel. easy to sharpen, gets scary sharp easily, if you take some reasonable amount of care for your knives, it really won't rust that easy
-they are great choppers, door-pryers, drum-stabbers and window-smashers

things i don't like about tops knives:

-most models are too big, heavy and cumbersome to be used with speed and precision, unless you're a strong, 6'4" tall bear of a man. the feeling i get with most tops knives is that they're some sort of crossing between a strider knife and an axe. they chop very well........and work very well as a melee weapon/tool too :-)
-some models are designed poorly when it comes to handling-ergonomics, and some features like barbwire-pulling sawteeth are kind of bullcrap and add to the cumbersome handling
-for simple 1095-carbon chunks of sharpened pieces of steel they are, indeed, somewhat expensive
-lots of models to choose from, but there's the problem: most look too much alike and look they've been designed randomly by an uninspired designer with the monday blues

i still like TOPS though, they're kind of a "more affordable Strider" kind of thing :)

Thanks for the reply Dennis75 i think im gonna get a couple of them i like certain models and agree fully with your last statement on quite a few of their knives but as long as they are quality i can pick some that i like okay. Thanks for the info. and to reply to your bear of a man statement, im 18, 6'5" 240 and bench about 275 so i got it covered.

I've had a Tops Tracker and while the quality of the knife was good, I didn't care for the Tracker itself. One thing people need to keep in mind with this knife, is it's designed to be a do all knife. While it won't do any one thing really well, it will allow you to get by doing lots of different things. While I like this style of knife, the Tracker just didn't fit me. I have small hands and I could never get a good solid grip. Granted, you could always reprofile the handle yourself for use. If I was going to go for a WSK design I would lean more towards the Rainbow Six Predator. While I've never handled this blade, it has received good reviews from people on the board and seems to have a better profiled grip. Hope this helps.

it's RED Scorpion Six - BLADES. man. No Tom Clancy

I have never owned a TOPS knife. I have seen them at their booth at 4 different knife shows. The guys at the booth at the ATLANTA BLADE Show seemed like decent guys.

My question is how good are their carbon steel blades. Is their heat treating really what it's cracked up to be?

I have heard good things about their California Cobra. thanks guys, Happy Thanksgiving :)
