Mike Fuller from TOPS sent me this photo of this bad boy. Nice! Here the letter from the guy who bought his friend (in the pic) a Kodiac Jac. This is in Kodiac, Alaska:

Hi Mike,

I bought one of your Kodiak Jac knives about 8 months ago for one of my buddies here at work. Well he got to use it for what you designed it for. Here is a picture of a Kodiak Jac knife skinning a real Kodiak Island Brown Bear. This is a 9 foot Brown Bear Killed in Kodiak this year (2008). He was real happy with his knife. He said it stayed sharp the whole time and was able to skin the entire bear without sharpening it. Hope to see you guys at the Shot Show.
Take Care,
Aaron

I bet that bear hates that knife! :D

Seriously though, that is one nice bear. And sounds like good edge retention from the knife, too. Was it 1095?

Elen, click on the link under the photo, and it'll take you to their page with info on the knife.

I like the big choil on that knife. Reminds me of my Gen. 2 Howling Rat.

Wow, that's a big bear. What does bear meat taste like? If someone says "chicken" I'm going to laugh my head off!

frog legs :D

Amazing - the bears head is the size of that guys full torso. 1095 is a great steel. This thread just reaffirms how we often get too fixated (I actually typed fixed bladed by mistake :D) on the steel of the month...

To me it tastes a little more like beef, but not quite as good in my opinion. Better than alligator, seal, beaver (no jokes please :D) but not as good as venison, snowshoe hare. Probably comparable to dog? Can't say though, haven't found a good recipe for dog. ;)

Good looking knife, definatley looks designed for skinning. That a big bear for sure.

Awesome Brian!!!!! Dude thats an amazing shot. That bear is freakin huge! Saved pic to my folder.

BIG BEAR!

TOP's knives don't get enough credit, some of the best 1095 I've ever seen.

Nate, have fun and stay safe out there!

Yeah, good old 1095 has always been a solid performer. Everybody gets taken in my the "new supersteel" marketing, and accuse companies of using 1095 because it's "cheaper for the manufacturer," - when in fact they have no idea what steel prices are, and are just parroting what they other uninformed people say.

Many of you know that I am very fond of TOPS knives, and especially the people who run it. I've used TOPS in some pretty knife-abusive real world situations, and mine have never failed me yet. Also, they are coming out with more and more great bushcraft-worthy designs, with thinner grinds and edges that slice like razors.

Now that is one huge bear!!! I know there got to be some good meat to last a long time. Bear steaks for a year.:D
