If there was a choice to select "Way Off Topic" I would have. This is a little project designed to save some money. I play drums profesionally and have a situation coming up where I need to be on the quiet side. I decided to make a pair of HOT RODS, rather than buy them at $16 a pair. HOT RODS are louder than brushes but quiter than sticks. To do this I needed some wooden dowls. Once I got them I needed the help of a small saw and Duct Tape.

Pretty simple affair

I must have bought the worst Duct Tape ever, it was splitting upward like cheap packaging tape. I should add that I also commited a big sin, to most of us here. I ventured out of the house wothout a knife.

Nice balance and they sound great.

Original TOPS Saw pictured with other great accessories.
TOPS has a plethora of utility tools that I have used on some pretty demanding trips.

The newer handle design has a nice bumby texture to it.

Saw blade is 3.5 inches. Kydex folding handle is 3.5 inches. Tool total length when opened is 7 inches long.

Man, I really like that saw. I might have to pick one of those up, sometime in the future!

On a side note, I'm currently trying to sell my old set of Ludwig's. I never play anymore, and me and the wife could use the extra money for christmas. But, damn economy isnt leave people much spare change at the moment, it seems. :grumpy:

very cool and fun way to save some $$! Your sticks show some beating from rimshots though. Vic Firths?

They are the Guitar Center Brand made by Vater. Cheaper! I am not picky with sticks since they almost all break just as fast. I hit hard, which is why I need something quiet. Cool we got drummers here.

Brian Jones, where you at?:)

That would make the perfect little pumpkin carver! I carved 2 pumpkins Sunday evening with my boys and no knife would work good:mad: and after even trying the dremel I removed the blade from my hack saw and it worked great. Might have to look into one of those little saws for next time, that's neat.

Thanks for sharing. Seeing the saw in your hand and compared to other knives gives me a much better idea of how big the saw is. I was thinking that they were much smaller.

Cool saw. I have been thinking about getting a saw for a trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area next year. But I want something lightweight. Thanks for the pics!

Awesome! Didnt countycomm sell those too?? I am not a drummer but i pick the guitar as much as I can. Love to meet new musicians.

Here I am! I have the same saw...excellent use. Where'd you get the dowels and how much were they? I hate the HOT RODS/Multi Rods because they ARE so overpriced...

Great idea, Reuben!

Light is right. I think it is about 1 ounce.

Fellow Drum Bum!:) I knew you would be interested in this topic. You were my only hope this thread would stay and not be moved.

Those little dowls are at almost any hardware store. The type I got are exactly the same diameter as the expensive HOT RODS. This thickness requires 19 dowls. I have made them with thicker dowls and just used about 7. It wasn't as cool and there wasn't as much bounce.

If you alreay have Duct Tape or Electric Tape then all you need is the wood. They are usually sold in 36-inch lengths. I made two pairs (4) for under the price of one pair in the store.
