Not meaning to be critical, just curious!
Why all the holes, cutouts etc in the various models? I'm not talking about the sawteeth, fullers or lanyard holes. The Hawk Recon has 2 holes and a slot cut out near the handle. Some other models are done this way also. Spear making perhaps? Maybe, but why risk losing the knife when you could use it to make as many spears as needed?
Are these models available without some of the cutouts etc?

I've been wondering this as well. Also, I'd appreciate an explanation of the advantages of the "American tanto" blade style used on many of the models, and an explanation of the serrations on that handle that appear to fall in the area cradled by the palm.

Corduroy,
I have no idea about the tanto point. I can tell you though, the serrated looking area on the handle is not as it appears. It is not "sharp" at all, they are very smooth and rounded. I think they are a nice added feature for a positive grip.

There are several unique features on the various Tops models, but very few are ever explained. Ron Hood has pointed out the features on the Anaconda series, but it's a guessing game on some of the other models. Why the raker teeth on the Storm Rider tantos? Looks? The Tops line is obviously built for hard use,why all the extras? I'd like to see plain jane versions of some of these designs.
My 2 cents!

Drew, Ron has commented on the Tanto point on his forum in detail. One of the main reasons that it is often on his knives is that his students find it easier to sharpen.

As to the holes, as long as they don't compromise the strength of the blade they are a benefit by just adding function. For example you can bend rods, run wire/cord etc. . I use my Calypso Jr. when I spool fishing line to increase the tension in this way.

I have a Storm Rider and have wondered about the teeth in the top. I tend to agree with Cliff that these knives are made with multiple purposes in mind. Even some off the wall stuff like mounting on a stick via the holes to make a spear, etc comes to mind.

I like mine. It's a very comfortable knife in the hand, although I don't do any testing of the level some others here do.

Cliff,I see your point, but I wonder why Tops has not described some of these extra functions. Leaving it to the imagination?
As robust as most of these designs are, I doubt that the holes would weaken them overall. But,if there is an intended function for these extras, why not list them? As I stated when I started this thread,I'm not trying to be critical, just curious.

Tenbeers, I understand your point and it is something that I have suggested to makers/dealers before. There are people who would appreciate more detailed commentary on their knives. My suggestion would be to send an email to the TOPS guys letting them know there is interest in this area.
