TOPS Tactical Steak Knives Have Arrived

Hey Brian, you know I have to have one now....Having a knife named after you would be neat...Brian's friends, how about Tres Libres dude...

Hey - do any of you guys have one of these?

I really like the idea of having forward serrations but would like to hear more about it and its functionality.

I saw the un-serrated version a couple of times. Its actually one of my favorite TOPS designs. A nice length and not to thick.

finally a knife with the serrations in the proper spot!

I'm thinking the same thing - I've been trying to design a knife for myself for use around the garden and the grill. I'd love to hear more from people that have this blade.

I guess Brian is sitll on his world tour :D

Finally a TOPS that isn't thick as a brick! :D (Yeah, I know, they have others that aren't but most of them sure are!)

Looks like a real nice general purpose utility/grill knife! I was curious about these ever since I first saw them in the "new stuff" section of Blade forever ago. :)

Sooooo...

Why is it called a steak knife? Is this a joke? I guess I don't get it. The design looks decent, I just don't understand the name. I dunno, if they said W&SS on them, that'd be cool. But at $100 I can think of several custom makers who could make a similar design out of just about any carbon steel. This may sound lame, but I would rather support the custom makers of W&SS as much as possible rather than a company who tries so hard to fit the current tacticool trends.

I agree with your assessment and also agree TOPS has some silly name for their knives.

I'd still like to hear a review on it.

I think a group buy would do better with WSS than "Brian's Buddies":D TOPS has some funky names and several of their designs are sharpened prybars, but their knives are well made. I would be interested in a group buy as well...most of TOPS knives are pretty expensive with regards to several of the custom makers we have on WSS, but I appreciate them as an American company that continues to listen to the customers and collaborates with other designers.

ROCK6

I'll reserve judgement until I've seen a batonning test on an oven roast.

they look great! very handy lookin design and i like the forward serrations! i have one of those lansky sharpeners and i gotta say,i really like it alot! i use it often, and it is great for a quick hone! -fed

Yes the name was a joke as are many of the names put out by TOPS. I think the owners just have a quirky sense of humour and this has been explained by Brian Jones who is friendly with the owners. Consider the name 'Baghdad boxcutter'. It is rather genius tribute to a tactical name that at the same time diffuses the mall ninja visage with the word 'boxcutter'. I'm not sure why TOPs gets such a bad rap here on the forums. The words overpriced get used often enough when describing them. They do come out with unique designs, a wide variety of them, and some good stuff all in time tested materials like mircate grips and 1095 steel.

I don't really have any TOPs blades, but I won't exclude them from purchasing either if the right design comes out. If somebody gave me a good little TOPs blade, I'd have no problems using one. They are so original in their designing and production of different styles that in my books that makes them kind of special and certainly in part justifies some of their price points.

Regarding the tactical steak knife. About the same time the OP was posted (more than 1 year ago if you check the dates), Brian Jones also posted a more thorough review of the blade in a camping setting. He batonned the heck of the knife and gave it good reviews.

Overall I like the design but 440C doesn't sit well with me...

440C is considered an amazing stainless steel. It has been out for a while and no longer retains the supersteel status. However, it is a great knife steel that is very hard and yet quite resistant to chipping. For example, Entrek knives, which have an excellent reputation uses this steel exclusively in their products.

I understand that you might prefer a carbon or tool steel to stainless myself. However, if I were going the stainless route, I wouldn't shy away from 440C, especially when heat treated by the folks at TOPs.
