Here's a question...

Who created the M43? I see them on the Tora site as well. Is this a standard model in Nepal, a british model, or what?

There is an International Khuk forum where just such questions are routinely batted out of the park. We've a link on the tips thread on the top of this page.

In this amatuer's opinion there have always been khuks in Nepal at one time or another that bore a lot of resemblance to todays 'm43'. I think most every style imaginable has been tried. But the M43 refers to a British military contract, I believe, from 1943.

There is singular approach to khuks that contends the khukuri is defined from British models. I don't see this, anymore than one shop in Nepal, one era, or one manufacturer has a lock on this classic design.

Hope this helps.

During the WWII, a varient of the Mk. II was issued to UK units that carried khukuri. Some were marked "M43." Both the "M43" and the MK II have continuously curved blades (like the HI version), a full length/width tang, and a full-coverage butt plate.

I am not clear on the differences between the MKII and the M43. I have read that the M43 has an integral bolster -- machined from the same piece of steel as the blade. One authority has opined that the M43 uniformly has recessed handle rivets. I have a khukuri with recessed rivets and a bolster that is not integral to the blade. So ?????????

aproy,

I was aware of the Tora products, but was not aware of their forum. After reading your post, I too went there and joined.

I see nothing wrong with using as many sources as possible to gain friends, learn new things, and to share your own thoughts with others :)

Unlike many gun forums, there are many fewer forums that specialize in the discussion of the khukuri knife, so one may as well benefit from what "is" available ;)

I'll make sure to stay above the fray of battles that may erupt over brand loyalty :)

Jimmy,

I've been looking at their knives too. I am interested in trying one out. I see several people from here over there. You can spot them quickly, they are busy defending HI. I'll be over there occasionally doing just that. Its just easy to read the posts and get steamed up real bad. Simon obviously made a grave mistake by using multiple accounts to market his wares with negativity. I am very happy with my Khukuri House knives, but I like HI better. I'm not going to get rid of both of the Indian Khukrappies either. They are real good as a cross reference. I will probably purchase one of the Tora knives for comparison and collectability. But I also have come to see HI as a cause rather than just a knife maker. My ultimate loyalty is here where I have been welcomed and accepted, and where Uncle Bill created an excellent forum for knowledge and commraderieship.

aproy,

I understand where your point of view comes from, and I respect it, as I respect you :)

As for my own loyalties, they rest with my god, family, and good friends, with it mattering little where those good friends and family are located.

This view of mine extends to good friends that I've met on internet forums. Just like all good friends, they may reside in various other places. I hope to gain some new on-line friendships here, there, and on other forums, with location, again, mattering very little to me :)

Friendships are one of the positives gained in visiting online forums. With that said, what drives me most in visiting any particular forum is knowledge and the sharing of that knowledge. If I feel that a forum is continually moving with shared information, and for the most part feel that personal attacks are kept under control, then I'm drawn to it like white on rice. However, if the forum is extremely slow, and information lays pretty much stale, then that atmosphere will drive me away. There may be some real nice folks in a ghost town forum, but ultimately the lack of movement will force me to part ways with it.

When it comes to online forums, I believe that many folks probably feel the same way I do.
Just like a sponge absorbs water, our minds soak in information. A good person also goes on to share that information with others. If this absorbtion of information can be done amongst good friends, all the better ;)

Thats nice and I agree wholeheartedly. This just happens to be my first real forum experience. Up until now I just havent found one that held me. I mean I check this one out several times a day. There is a woodworking forum at Taunton Press I've posed some questions to, but I don't check it, or know the names of anyone. Its just a resource. Here I wait for Kismet to say something funny, for Munk to give level headed wisdom, etc. There are people here that I like talking to and hearing from. I'm not trying to say these are better people, but I feel at home here. Like you said new friends and new knowledge.

This is why I say that friendship location matters so little to me. To me, it's not so much the location, it's the people in that location that can make it interesting, funny, helpful, and so on.

For instance, this conversation that you and I are having right now, could just as easily be taking place at the Tora forum,....... such is life :)

Though the person that runs Tora, I believe named Simon, may not be liked by some folks, he is liked by others, and that too is just a part of life.

Though I have never communicated with Simon, I have read some of his personal views on the khukuri subject, and I concur with many of them. Does this make me a bad person?...... Of course not, just a person that has his own mind and can respectfully agree or disagree with any other fellow human being. Just another part of life :)

I have not yet posted there, but will instead wait until after I feel the environment out first :)

WE get to find our own way, that's a fact; in friends, forums, and tools we enjoy the most.

There is nothing 'fair' or equal about the universe, though, and each must decide for themselves.

I am a little leery and weary of this thread. HI people do not speak ill of another's endeavers but we are not required to provide continued advertising either, especially when manners dictate the truth not be aired for what would only be destructive and needless. Everyone knows what the situation is and can make their own judgement. It is not fitting though, in our members and friend's restraint, that the appearence of equality or peerage be established for a competitor we will not speak ill of.

That would be self destructive and unseemly.

I would like to close this thread, but will leave it in hope all has been said that people feel need be said.

As Howard said towards the beginning of this thread, "It will be watched closely."
I feel enough has been said about Tora and the Khukuri House and we all recognise that good khukuris are made by at least a couple of others besides HI.
However this forum is the HI Forum and not the Tora or Khukuri House Forum.
I'm not munk or Howard so I'm choosing to close this thread as I feel it has served it's purpose and then some.
After discussing it with Howard and munk we may choose to open it later, or not.
As far as I'm concerned enough is enough.;)
