Is anyone currently using a torch to harden these or other plain carbon or low alloy steel? How well does it work? Have you had hardness testing or micrographs made?

I have thousands of springs in service. 4 have failed, and they were from a piece of bad steel.

I skipped past just using a torch to using a paint can forge, and a torch. I'm glad I did. It is easier to get an even heat in a simple, easy to make paint can or 2 brick forge than a torch in open air. I highly recommend building a small forge. it's simple and cheap.

I think they will harden, but without at least a 5-10 minute soak, you are leaving performance on the table.
