just got off the phone with a very well known knifemaker....talked about the above, would like some other opinions....as it major work hardens when you get it red hot, was wondering about torching the edge of a small 6/4 Ti knife that i made for myself. Thanks in advance.

Well, i check out that site...but dude, im just a fell off the cabbage cart bumpkin knifemaker....that info is WAY too high tech for me, i just want to know what people think about cooking the edge of a ti 6/4 knife with a propane torch and how hot and what color and stuff....basic knifemaking 101, nothing complicated....makes me dizzy.

Yeah, I know what you mean, scary thing is when that techie babble actually starts making sense

BTW, from what I know of heat treating titanium(not a lot mind you) its usually best to harden the whole thing, as it increases the resistance to bending by a *lot*
1652-1751 deg. F for 1 hour
water quench
age at 1004 deg. F for 4 hours

Looks like I'm gonna have to get some 6-4 and see if it actually works too

Tom;
When you get it finished, send it to me for some scientific testing.

floyd....it was finished the day i started it, if you send it back id be happy to let you abuse it....it was the only piece of thick (over .140" thick) titanium 6/4 i had in my shop.....I have torched the blade twice with my propane torch....never got it close to being red but the blade is blue all over...especially at the edge...i have sharpened and resharpened it about 5 times at different angles...has an appleseed edge right now....feels very sharp...let me know. tom

Tom,
Not sure exactly what your looking at doing from the torch hardening aspect, but I have never seen or heard of a piece of 6/4 Ti that would get past an Rc 48. I've heard the same thing Tim said, but never really had an application where is was necessary. I suspect that it would be like most other materails we work with, if you play around with different treatments, your likely to achieve the results your looking for, within the limits of the material.

ed..thanks for your imput...I am not trying to get it harder than is possible...just wondering.....as when i grind the stuff it gets super hard when i let it get hot (i.e. dull belt vs titanium) and am wondering how I can do the same thing with the edge of the knife i just made...thanks...
